Errol Spence to fight in April, May or June 2023

By Brian Webber: Errol Spence Jr. revealed last Saturday night that he will be fighting in the first half of next year, in April, May, or June.

Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) says he was going to reveal his announcement four days after his recent car accident, but he started feeling pain from the crash, which wasn’t his fault.

Errol will turn 33 in March, and he’s not getting any younger; his career has slowed to a crawl, similar to Gennadiy Golovkin’s career.

Errol isn’t saying who his opponent will be, but it will not be Terence Crawford and likely not Keith Thurman. It could be a simple defense against one of the bottom feeders in the division.

The downside of IBF, WBA & WBC welterweight champion Spence fighting in April, May, or June is that he’ll be coming off a year-long layoff since his last fight in April 2022.

It’s not only difficult for a fighter to keep his popularity up when they’re fighting only once a year, but it’s bad for the sport and for the contenders waiting for their title shot.

Since 2020, Spence has fought just twice, beating Ugas and Danny Garcia. Errol didn’t fight at all in 2021 and came back in 2022 to stop Ugas from a grueling affair.

“I was going to have a fight announcement three or four days after my accident, but stuff started hurting, so we pushed it back. We’re going to wait on the announcement,” said Errol Spence Jr to Showtime Boxing last Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Probably around May or June, April, May or June. I just got to talk to my team, and hopefully, I recover 100%. I’m sure I’ll recover 100% because I’ve been in worse accidents.

“Hopefully, I’ll talk to my team, and we’ll come up with a date that suits both of us, and we’ll make it happen,” said Spence.

For Spence’s sake, he needs to pick someone good because the boxing public is losing patience with him and his inactivity. He missed a lot of time after his car crash in late 2019, and then he was out for a year in 2021 after suffering an eye injury.

Spence would be doing the sport a solid if he were to vacate all three of his belts, so that the active contenders like Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, Vergil Ortiz Jr or Keith Thurman could fight for the straps.
