Errol Spence says Tank Davis vs. Crawford would be a “good fight”

By Jim Calfa: Errol Spence Jr. says he likes the idea of Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis fighting Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford. Spence says that’s a “good fight.

He feels Tank (27-0, 25 KOs) can knock out anybody if he catches them clean. If Crawford were to lose to the much smaller Tank Davis, he could never live it down.

A loss like that would permanently tarnish Crawford’s resume, and there wouldn’t be anything he could do about it other than cry his way to the bank. The money would be very good.

Tank reportedly expressed interest in facing WBO welterweight champion Crawford (39-0, 30 KOs), and he believes he can beat him.

With Crawford turning 36 soon and not looking great in his last fight against David Avanesyan on December 10th, you can’t rule out a win for Gervonta, even though he’d be giving away a lot of size.

As for IBF/WBA/WBC welterweight champion Spence, he says he’s probably not going to be fighting Crawford in his next bout in 2023.

Spence didn’t like the fact that Crawford was negotiating without him knowing with BLK Prime for a fight against Avanesyan. Errol says he has no problem with Crawford taking the fight for the ten-million-dollar bag, but it’s the principle of the matter.

Spence didn’t like that Crawford didn’t tell him that he was negotiating for another fight.

If Spence were to go into the second round of negotiations with Crawford next year, it would have to be in the back of his mind the possibility that Bud is negotiating with another company at the same time and could disappear again without warning.

Spence would be kicking himself for not having learned his lesson about what happened the first time he tried to negotiate a fight with Crawford.

“I don’t know. It’s not something I’m focused on right now,” said Errol Spence Jr to ESNEWS when asked what’s going on with Terence Crawford. “I just got into an accident a while back, two weeks ago.

It’s not looking like it’s going to happen in the next fight,” said Spence about a match against Crawford. “So, hopefully, it can definitely happen this year.

“Yeah, I watched the highlights [of Crawford vs. David Avanesyan on December 10th]. I can’t knock him for the money. He said he’s making ten million dollars. No knock to him. Fight a bum and make ten million dollars is great.

“I’m not knocking him for it. I just felt like he should have been more on the up and up. He should have told us that he was talking the whole time. He was talking to us and talking to them.

“He went off trying to get a quick bag. I’m not knocking the bag. How he went about things. He went about things the wrong way. Nah,” said Spence when asked if he’s talked to Crawford since his disappearance act.

“It would be a good fight. Tank can hit,” said Spence in reacting to Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis saying he can knockout Crawford. “Tank has the kind of power where he’ll knock anybody out if he catches them clean. I think it’ll be a good a** fight. I rock with Tank on that, anyway.

“I don’t believe in tune-ups. It’s not my pedigree, fighting someone I know I can beat in a showcase fight. I’m still going to train hard, but I’m not going to train as hard as I would if I were fighting a top dude with a name.

“The fans deserve it too. They don’t want to see you fight a bum dude or a showcase fight,” said Spence.

If Spence doesn’t believe in tune-ups, then his first fight this year needs to be a good someone good like Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis if he’s going to be fighting at 147. Keith Thurman is shot, and there aren’t any other available welterweights that the boxing public cares about like Vergil Ortiz and Eimantas Stanionis.
