In the first round, it was a good one with Alvarado pressing Edwards, who countered well considering the former champ going after him. In the second round, Edwards was landing wide punches.

Seconds before the bell, Edwards rocked Alvarado with a right uppercut to the chin. In the third round, Alvarado had a flurry driving Edwards into a corner several times, taking the round.

In the third through the sixth rounds, Alvarado never stopped coming forward, making the fight interesting and close against the champ Edwards. In the seventh round, Alvarado did well going to the body, having a good round.

In the eighth round halfway point, Edwards landed his best punch up to this point, a solid right on the chin of Alvarado knocking his head back. In the second half of the round, it was all Alvarado.

In the ninth round, it was all Alvarado having Edwards pinned against the ropes at the bell. In the tenth and eleventh rounds, Edwards earlier lead in the first half all but disappeared in the second half of the fight.

With the fight on the line into the twelfth and final round, Alvarado was fighting out of desperation, knowing getting a decision in the UK is slim; he was throwing wildly while Edwards was having his best round countering Alvarado, who was walking into punches. The referee was Steve Gray.

Scores were 116-112 and 115-113 twice, as did this writer have it.

In the semi-final, WBA Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight champion Jack Bateson 17-1 (4), #120 ½, of Leeds, Yorkshire, UK, was stopped by southpaw Shabaz “Maverick” Masoud, 11-0 (4), #121 ¾, of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, UK, at 2:00 of the twelfth and final round.

In the first two rounds, they exchanged who won. Bateson was going from orthodox to southpaw against southpaw Masoud. In the third and fourth rounds, Masoud had a big round scoring well on Bateson. In the fifth round, with just over a minute remaining, Masoud rocked Bateson with a lead left on the chin. Bateson’s accuracy is off, and coming in low with his head, he’s an easy target for Masoud to land punches.

In the sixth, Bateson had Masoud against the ropes for the first time. Ending the first minute, Masoud rocked Bateson with a left on the chin.

In the seventh round’s final minute, Bateson finally put together a flurry of punches to the body. Overall, Masoud, on the defense, has hands high, making it even harder for Bateson to land anywhere but the body.

In the ninth round, Masoud’s body shots are having an effect on Bateson, then going to the head cut Bateson on the bridge of his nose at the halfway point. The cut seemed to spur Bateson on a bit in the second half of the round. In the tenth round’s final seconds, a combination from Masoud hurt Bateson backing him up several steps.

In the eleventh round, final minute Masoud landed a hard lead left to the chin of Bateson. In the twelfth and final round halfway point, Masoud dropped Bateson with a right on the chin for an 8-count.

Within seconds a right on the side of the head from Masoud and down went Bateson for a second time. Masoud jumped all over Bateson with no return punches as Referee Howard Foster stopped it. Masoud has earned a shot at the British title next.

2021 Olympic Gold Medalists Middleweight Hebert Conceicao, 3-0 (1), #163, of Salvador, Bahia, BRZ, defeated Gideon “Jonas” Onyenani, 4-2 (1), #162 ½, of Chatham, Kent, UK, over six rounds.

In the first three rounds, Conceicao controlled for the most part with an effective jab. In the fifth round, the pace picked up, with Conceicao continuing to dominate Onyenani. In the sixth and final round, Conceicao landed a left hook to the chin of Onyenani halfway through the round. Both boxers were warned for infractions by referee Howard Foster.

Score from Referee Howard Foster 60-54
