Oleksandr Usyk: “Hey, Tyson, Borracho, let’s make it happen”

By Charles Brun: Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk called out WBC belt holder Tyson Fury today, referring to him as “Borracho,” which means a drunk in Spanish.

IBF, WBA & WBO champion Usyk (20-0, 13 KOs) says he wants to fight Fury (32-0-1, 23 KOs) next, ideally. Of course, that will depend on how the negotiations work.

If Fury goes about it in the same bungling way he approached the Anthony Joshua fight, we won’t see a Usyk-Fury fight forever. Instead, it’ll likely be another Dereck Chisora-esque opponent for the ‘Gypsy King while what’s left of his popularity in the UK rapidly erodes.

With Fury’s impatience that he showed in his failed negotiations for the Joshua clash, it came across as a spoiled toddler, a person that had gotten his way so many times that he no longer had the calmness to deal with the give & take of negotiating a mega-fight.

Hopefully, for Usyk’s sake, Fury’s management keeps him muzzled during talks because they can’t afford to have him wreck things again with his ham-handed approach to negotiations.

If you’re Usyk, it would be a good idea to keep Deontay Wilder on speed dial as a plan B when/if the negotiations with Fury turn out to be a disaster like the Joshua talks.

“I’m appealing to Tyson Fury. Hey, Tyson, borracho, let’s make it happen. Hey, borracho, let’s fight; let’s determine who is the best in the division, who is the best in the world. Borracho, Tyson Fury, you borracho,” said Oleksandr Usyk to SecondsOut, asking Tyson Fury to fight him next.

I would say that the Usyk vs. Fury fight will determine who is the best in the heavyweight division, and it for sure won’t determine the most popular fighter in the weight class.

What there needs to be is a heavyweight tournament to decide who is the best in the division. These are the needed participants:

  • Deontay Wilder
  • Oleksandr Usyk
  • Tyson Fury
  • Joe Joyce
  • Daniel Dubois
  • Anthony Joshua
  • Luis Ortiz
  • Andy Ruiz Jr
  • Frank Sanchez
  • Arslanbek Makhmudov
  • Filip Hrgovic
  • Martin Bakole
  • Lenier Pero

“Tyson Fury is our biggest priority,” said Usyk. “I was asked who I’d also like to fight; I mentioned Deontay Wilder. Now people try to say my next opponent is Wilder. No, that is not true.

“My next opponent is Fury. After I defeat him, I will discuss it with Deontay.”
