David Benavidez vs. Morrell planned for May or June says Sampson Lewkowicz

By Craig Page: Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz says David Benavidez will be fighting WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell in May or June, as long as the Cuban fighter wins his fight next Saturday night against Aidos Yerbossynuly on November 5th.

Lewkowicz says they have a contract for Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) to fight the unbeaten Morrell (7-0, 6 KOs). The 24-year-old Morrell will defend against the unbeaten Yerbossynuly (16-0, 11 KOs) on Showtime at The Armory, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

According to Lewkowicz, Benavidez’s planned fight against former IBF 168-lb champion Jose Uzcategui in January is still up in the air, as there are a “few issues” that need to be taken care of.

When asked about whether a fight between Benavidez and Caleb Plant could happen, Sampson didn’t sound confident about it taking place.

Morrell is arguably a more talented fighter than Plant, but he’s not as well known as him. Even though it is a difficult fight, Benavidez won’t get as much attention facing him as Plant, well-known for his fights against Canelo Alvarez, Anthony Dirrell, and Uzcategui.

“Supposedly, it can be very easy, but you never know in boxing,” said Sampson Lewkowicz to Fighthype about a fight between David Benavidez and Caleb Plant. “We’ll see what happens in the next couple of weeks.

With David Morrell, we have a contract. If he becomes victorious, we will fight Benavidez in May or June. He’s [Morrell] supposed to win his fight next week [against Aidos Yerbossynuly], and if he wins that fight, most likely, we will fight against David Benavidez in May or June, and that is a fact. It’s very close to be done.

“Sometimes you need courage to fight David Benavidez, and Morrell has it,” said Lewkowicz when asked why Benavidez isn’t fighting Caleb Plant. “He didn’t care what the management say. I’m sure Plant and others is willing to fight for the right price.

“I will see Eddy Reynoso and Canelo next month in Acapulco. Maybe Elvis Presley will help. Canelo will fight anybody. It’s Eddy Reynoso that doesn’t want it. He fought 15 of them. Maybe he got tired,” said Lewkowicz when asked about his thoughts on Canelo not fighting Mexican fighters.

“Plant would be a good fight. I believe he’d be equal or better than Morrell, but it would definitely be pay-per-view. With Morrell, it won’t be pay-per-view because not many people know the qualifications of Morrell. It’s a very dangerous fight.

“He’s supposed to, but we’ll see what happens. We have a few issues that we need to take care of,” said Lewkowicz when asked to confirm if Benavidez will be fighting Jose Uzcategui in January.
