Boxing Results: Lomachenko Defeats Jamaine Ortiz!

By Ken Hissner: At Madison Square Garden Theater, New York, New York Saturday over ESPN+ Bob Arum (Top Rank) presented in the Main Event former 2-time Olympic Gold Medalist and 3-division world champion Vasyl “Loma” Lomachenko won a hard-fought twelve round decision taking the last three rounds over previously unbeaten USBA & NABF Lightweight champion Jaimaine “The Technician” Ortiz over 12 rounds.

In the Main Event 3-division world champion, Lightweight Vasyl “Loma” Lomachenko, 17-2 (11), #134.6, of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, UKR, and Oxnard, CA, defeated USBA & NABF champ Jermaine “The Technician” Ortiz, 16-1-1 (8), #134, of Worcester, MASS, over 12 hard fought rounds.

In the first round, Lomachenko kept up the pressure but received a red mark under his right eye from the countering Ortiz. In the second round, a clash of heads only made the injury under the right eye worse for Lomachenko.

In the third round, Lomachenko, halfway through the round, hurt Ortiz with a short left on the chin. In the fourth round, Ortiz came back well, keeping Lomachenko from getting any offense started.

In the fifth round, Ortiz had swelling under his left eye from the combinations from Lomachenko. In the sixth, through the eighth round, Ortiz had an edge. In the ninth round, Lomachenko hurt Ortiz, making him hold halfway through the round. In the final half, a minute, Ortiz came back well.

In the tenth round, Lomachenko came back well, taking the round going into the championship rounds that he, not Ortiz, have been through. In the eleventh round, it was more in favor of Lomachenko having hurt Ortiz halfway through the round with a body shot. In the twelfth and final round, Lomachenko showed his experience by going twelve rounds, while Ortiz has never been past ten. Both fighters had their faces showing how it was a battle.

Scores 115-113, 116-112, and 117-111 with this writer 115-113. The referee was Charley Fitch.

Featherweight 2-time Olympic Gold Medalist southpaw Robeisy Ramirez, 11-1 (7), #125.6, of Cuba and Gulfport, FL, stopped Jose Matias Romero, 26-3 (9), #127.4, of Cordoba, ARG, at 2:20 of the ninth round of a scheduled 10 rounds.

In the first round, Ramirez had Romero down for an 8-count. In the four rounds, it was all Ramirez driving Romero back for the most part. In the fifth through the seventh rounds, it was all Ramirez who punched too hard for Romero.

In the ninth round, Ramirez had Romero hurt and bleeding from the nose when Referee Danny Schiavone waved it off.

Featherweight Olympic Silver Medalist Duke Ragan, 8-0 (1), #128, of Cincinnati, OH, won a close decision over Luis “Popeye” Legron, 18-5-1 (11), #128, of San Juan, PR, over 8 hard-fought rounds.

In the first three rounds, Ragan had the edge in a close fight. In the fourth round, Legron came back well with a good body attack. In the sixth round, Ragan’s mouthpiece came out from a combination of Legron having Ragan hurt to the body.

In the seventh round, again, the mouthpiece of Ragan went out as he seems to be tiring. In the eighth and final round, Legron had Ragan holding on, who has never gone this far in a fight but not trying to fight back.

Scores 77-75, 78-74, and 79-73 with this writer 76-76.

Super Welter Olympian Troy “Transformer” Isley, 8-0 (4), #159, of Alexandria, VA, defeated Quincy “Chico” LaVallais, 14-4-1 (9), #157.4, of Panama City, FL, over a hard-fought 8 rounds.

In the first round, Isley outworked LaVallais. In the second round, it was LaVallais going to the body of Isley. In the third and fourth, both had their moment mostly going to the body as LaVallais was the aggressor. In the fifth round, LaVallis kept moving Isley back but getting countered.

In the sixth round, Isley landed an overhand right on the chin of LaVallais, only to have the latter come back with a flurry of punches in the final minute of the round. In the seventh round, Isley seemed to be wearing down LaVallais. Halfway through the round, Isley rocked LaVallais with a right to the chin. There was no quit in LaVallais who would keep coming back mostly to the body of Isley. Referee Arthur Mercante, Jr., in the final seconds, warned Isley for using his shoulder.

In the eighth and final round, after a minute a left to the body from Isley doubled LaVallais over, but he recovered quickly. Isley landed a double left hook to the chin and wondered what is holding LaVallais up. At the bell, a left and right from Isley on the chin while backed in a corner knocked the head of LaVallais back.

Scores were 79-73, 80-72 twice, and 78-74 by this writer.

Super Feather Haven, Brady, Jr., 8-0 (4), #131, of Albany, GA, defeated Eric Mondragon, 8-1-1 (4), #130.6, of Maywood, CA, over 8 rounds.

In the first four rounds, each fighter had their moments. In the sixth round, Brady took over, taking a slight lead being the aggressor. In the seventh round’s final seconds, Brady landed a big right to the chin of Mondragon. In the eighth and final round, Brady chased Mondragon, who is trying to survive. Suddenly with thirty seconds to go Mondragon rocked Brady with a left hook to the chin having him grab and hang onto the bell.

Scores 78-74 and 79-73, as did this writer.

Middle Nico Walsh Ali, 7-0 (5), #159, of Las Vegas, NV, defeated Billy Wagner, 5-3 (1), 159, of Great Falls, MONT, over 6 rounds.

In the first round, it was all Ali who opened a cut on the right eyebrow of Wagner with a left hook in the final thirty seconds. In the second round, Ali drew blood from the nose of Wagner. At the end of the round, a clash of heads and Ali got the worst of it at the bell while Wagner made a strong finish to the round.

In the fourth round, Ali finished strong and had the face of Wagner bleeding from the right eyebrow and nose. In the fifth round, Ali was outworking Wagner, who never gave up. In the sixth and final round, Wagner was having his best round until the final seconds when Ali rocked him with a left to the chin.

Scores 58-56 twice and 59-55 with this writer 58-56.

Heavyweight Olympic Silver Medalist southpaw Richard Torrez, Jr., 4-0 (4), #229.4, of Tulare, CA, stopped Ahmed “Prince of Egypt” Hefney, 13-3 (5), #218, of Alexandria, Egypt, and Brooklyn, NY, at 2:32 of the third round of a scheduled 6 rounds.

Welter Delante “Tiger” Johnson, 6-0 (4), #141.4, of Cleveland, OH, defeated southpaw Esteban Garcia, 15-2 (7), #139.2, of Brawley, CA, over 6 hard rounds.

In the first two rounds, the taller Johnson used his jab to counter Garcia, who kept coming forward. In the third round’s final seconds, it was Garcia landed a left to the chin of Johnson, who was backed into a corner. In the fourth round, Johnson used good left and right uppercuts to the chin of Garcia.

In the fifth round, Garcia was having his best round keeping Johnson against the ropes for the most part. In the sixth and final round, Johnson landed over a dozen punches halfway through the round without return. In the final thirty seconds, it was Garcia fighting back, finishing strong.

Scores were all 60-54, with this writer 59-55.

Lightweight southpaw Abdullah Mason, 5-0 (4), #135.6, of Cleveland, OH, stopped Angel Barrera, 4-1 (0), #135, of Acambaro, Guanajuato, MEX, and Chicago, IL, at 0:21 of round four of a scheduled 6 rounds.

In the first round, with a minute remaining a left uppercut from Mason drew blood from the nose of Barrera. In the third round, a left from Mason on the chin dropped Barrera for an 8-count from Referee Johnny Callas. Seconds later, another left on the chin dropped Barrera with thirty seconds remaining for another 8-count.

In the third round, before the start referee, Callas talked to the ring physician. Twenty seconds into the round a flurry from Mason forced referee Callas to wave it off.
