Adrien Broner signs with BLK Prime, says “We’re going to take over boxing”

By Jim Calfa: Adrien Broner has been given a second chance with his career by signing an eight-figure, three-fight, 12-month deal with BLK Prime on Tuesday.

By signing with BLK Prime, Broner joins WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford, who is reportedly being paid $10 million to defend against David Avanesyan on December 10th on pay-per-view.

It’s unclear whether Broner’s three-fight deal means that all three contests will be shown on BLK pay-per-view, but you to assume that it will be, given the big money he’s being paid.

If all three of Broner’s fights are going to be shown on PPV, he will need to fight highly ranked contenders that are popular and/or champions.

We don’t know yet which division Broner will be fighting in for those three contests. If it’s 140, it’s fair to say that he probably won’t do well. Broner has had problems making the 140-lb limit, and he hasn’t fought in that weight class since 2017 when he was dominated by Mikey Garcia in a 12 round unanimous decision loss.

Not many fighters get a second chance when they’ve failed for as long as the 33-year-old ‘The Problem’ Broner (34-4-1, 24 KOs) has, but BLK Prime has taken an interest in the fading former star, giving him a fat contract that will pay him at least eight figures, according to AB, and keep him busy for the next year.

You hate to say it, but this could be a bad investment on BLK Prime’s part in signing Broner to such a fat deal because the way he’s performed in the last decade, he’s not going to be able to turn things around to be the fighter that he once was from 2008 to 2013.

“I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in the sport, but it always gives me another chance to take over boxing,” said Adrien Broner on Monday, announcing his eight-figure, three-fight, 12-month deal with BLK Prime.

“I want to give a shout-out to Desmond. I call him ‘Uncle Des,’ the CEO of BLK Prime. I want to thank him for believing in me and getting this deal done.

“I think with myself and my About Billions brand and BLK Prime; I think we’re going to take over boxing. We’re going to reach heights that we’ve never reached before.

“It’s all going to start with my stable mate from Nebraska. Now he’s my stable mate. We’re on the same team,” said Broner about Crawford.

It sounds like Broner still thinks he’s the young fighter that held worked titles at 130 and 135. Those are the only two divisions where Broner was fighting at a high level, and that was ten years ago.

Since moving to 147 in 2013 and 140 in 2014, Broner has fought poorly, losing fights and getting a handful of controversial decisions.

Broner’s questionable decisions:

  • Adrian Granados
  • Jessie Vargas
  • Jovanie Santiago
  • Paulie Malignaggi
  • Daniel Ponce de León
