David Benavidez blasts Canelo Alvarez for not fighting him

By Dan Ambrose: David Benavidez is angry that he’s won two WBC super middleweight title eliminators and also captured the WBC interim 168-lb title in hopes of getting a title shot against champion Canelo Alvarez but it’s not happened.

Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) says he was told each time that if he won the fights, he would get a shot at Canelo, but he’s no luck. It’s unclear why the World Boxing Council hasn’t ordered Canelo to defend against Benavidez because at least if they’d make that move, the fans would see the fight that they want.

Benavidez says he’s going to move up to 175 next year if he doesn’t get the fights that he wants against Canelo and Caleb Plant. He wants the Bivol vs. Ramirez winner.

“I don’t think it was a good fight. It was a really boring fight,” said David Benavidez to lalosboxing about last weekend’s Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin III trilogy.

“It would have been a completely different fight,” said Benavidez when asked what he would have done had he fought Canelo. “I’m taller, stronger. The only thing Canelo has against me is experience.

“The guys that Canelo has fought in the super middleweight division have no power. They’re trash. That’s why they can’t back Canelo up. Golovkin had the power to back Canelo up.

“When he [Canelo] fought Caleb Plant, he had no power; Billy Joe Saunders had no power. The guy that he first one a belt from at 168 [Rocky Fielding]. He had no power. Yildirim had no power. The only good champion he beat was Callum Smith. I give him respect for that.

“If Canelo doesn’t respect your power, it’s going to be a problem. I have 26 wins with 23 knockouts, and I definitely have the power and definitely have the speed to keep him out and be really effective against him.

“How he ended the press conference just because somebody brought my name up. I know it’s getting to his head; he’s mad about that. I earned my spot. I’ve been #1 with the WBC for four fights now. I just want the position they promised me.

“They said, ‘Win this WBC title eliminator, and you’ll fight Canelo next.’ I fought two of them. Then they said, ‘Win the WBC interim title, and you’ll fight Canelo next.’ What do you think the ranking system is for?” said Benavidez.
