Canelo looking beatable after 2 poor performances

By Jim Calfa: Canelo Alvarez looked very ordinary in beating the shell of Gennadiy Golovkin by a 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night.

The way Canelo has looked in his last two fights, he’d be food for many of the contenders at 168 and 160. He might as well forget about ever fighting at 175 again because he’s no match for the champions Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev.

After this poor performance by Canelo, fighters are going to be pushing hard to face him because they see the deterioration in him now.

In the post-fight press conference, Canelo tried to blame his lackluster performance against Golovkin on having a left wrist injury.

However, that doesn’t explain why Canelo continually missed with his right hand, which wasn’t injured.

While the 32-year-old Canelo clearly beat the badly aged 40-year-old Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs), he looked nothing special and showed no notable improvements over his recent loss to Dmitry Bivol.

In some ways, Canelo looked worse than he did against Bivol because he was badly missing Golovkin all night long.

Like a lot of aging fighters, Canelo’s accuracy was gone, and he seemed unable to tag GGG, even when he was standing right in front of him.

Canelo is now looking almost as old as the 40-year-old Golovkin, and you can’t blame it on his left wrist problem.

There’s serious deterioration for Canelo, and it’s not something that’s going to disappear after his left wrist surgery. Canelo has made a lot of money, so he can obviously retire at any time, just like Golovkin.

If Canelo wants to go out as a warrior, then he needs to run the gauntlet and fight these fighters before he hangs up his gloves:

  • David Benavidez
  • Dmitry Bivol
  • Artur Beterbiev
  • David Morrell
  • Jermall Charlo

Bivol made Canelo look very ordinary last May in beating him by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision that he won’t soon forget.

“It was a dominant performance, and he showed once again that he is a force to be reckoned with at 168,” said Claudia Trejos to K.O. Artist Sports about Canelo Alvarez’s win over Gennadiy Golovkin last Saturday.

“Obviously, Gennadiy has the ability to assimilate that kind of punishment. He took it all the way to the distance. My respectable fighters.

“Gennadiy Golovkin had a 27 streak of knockout wins. That’s a force to be reckoned with at 160. That doesn’t go out with age. He can be 45; he can be 50. Let’s ask Bernard Hopkins. Let’s ask George Foreman.

“That’s some serious power to be dealing with. So let’s be fair. Just because he [Canelo] took a chance and went up to 175, there’s nothing wrong with that. Lady luck favors the bold, and Canelo is a bold man.

He actually took Bivol and Gennadiy with a broken left hand. He took both of them the distance, so let’s be fair.

“I think it would be interesting seeing two Mexicans with [David] Benavidez, especially because Benavidez is very tall,” said Trejos when asked who Canelo should fight next.

“He’s been there before, and he’s faced those fighters. But knowing him [Canelo], he wants to take that 175 for pride alone.

“That would be an interesting fight too,” said Trejos about the November 5th fight between Bivol and Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez.

“A tall, lanky Mexican fighter [Zurdo Ramirez]. He was the first Mexican fighter to take a win at a championship at 168. So this will be an interesting match-up. Let’s not forget that Zurdo isn’t at 168 anymore. Now he’s at 175.

“So if he’s [Canelo] willing to take that fight, two Mexicans at 1775, all I can say is if that does happen, prepare. That is fireworks of the wazoo,” said Trejos.
