By Craig Daly: Ryan Garcia weighed 140 pounds at Friday’s weigh-in for his 12-round headliner clash against Javier Fortuna (37-3-1, 26 KOs) this Saturday night. For his part, the 33-year-old Fortuna weighed in at 139.8 lbs.

The fight will be shown on DAZN at the Crypto Arena in Los Angeles. Surprisingly, the face-off was uneventful between the two fighters despite all the trash-talking between Ryan and Fortuna.

Fortuna wasn’t going to do anything to create problems in terms of fines.

Ryan has tried hard to artificially drive interest in the Fortuna fight by talking nonstop about how his next bout will be against Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.

That roundabout approach of getting fans excited at wanting to see the Garcia-Fortuna fight has failed to work, however, and many view it as a cherry-pick on Ryan’s part.

The fact that Fortuna was recently beaten by Joseph ‘Jojo’ Diaz is the main reason the knowledgeable boxing fans have little interest in Saturday’s match-up.

Ryan should have faced Jojo Diaz, but obviously, he didn’t want to take the risk and lose out on the big payday against Tank Davis later this year.

Garcia-Fortuna agreed to move the weight to 140 due to the former WBA super featherweight champion coming into camp heavy.

After this fight, the 23-year-old Ryan will be returning to the 135-lb division to possibly challenge WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis next in November or December.

“Ryan is unique and stands alone in terms of destroying [opponents],” said trainer Joe Goosen to Fight Hub TV. “I’ve never had a guy that could destroy sparring partners like that, never ever.

“I told Ryan, ‘Your hand might even have a little more zip on it. I don’t know how that’s possible.’ Nobody has ever hurt my hand when I’m holding the mitts.

“Ryan buzzed my wrist one time. It took about a week to recover, and nobody has ever done that. That was with his right hand,” said Goosen.

“I’ve been around a long time, and this kid [Ryan Garcia] checks all the boxes. We’re not even talking about his personality, his looks, his social media frenzy around him, everything about him. His intelligence and he’s got a love for people too.

“He is one of the welcoming open-arms guys that you’ll ever meet. I can’t say enough about Ryan, and he doesn’t hesitate to say, ‘Hey, I love you.’ He wears his heart on his sleeves.

“He’s an unusual, in a great way, an unusual character. Forget about boxing, just in life in general. He’s charismatic, and people are attracted to him because he’s got something special about him.

“He’s fun to be around. This is going to be a great ride. We’re going somewhere with this, I know that,” said Goosen.
