By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. came to the defense of Canelo Alvarez on Tuesday, saying that lightweight Ryan Garcia shouldn’t be talking bad about the Mexican star until he’s accomplished what he’s done in the sport.
Ryan and Canelo have been going back and forth since the popular social media/boxer left his gym due to him not getting enough training time with coach Eddy Reynoso.
You can’t say that Ryan (22-0, 18 KOs) is taking shots at Canelo in the true sense because he hasn’t said much other than he thinks he could lose his next fight against 40-year-old Gennadiy Golovkin on September 17th.
Ryan is likely basing his views of the Canelo-Golovkin III fight on how Canelo performed against WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol on May 7th.
Canelo looked terrible, gassing out after three rounds, loading up on single shots, and getting outboxed the entire way. In looking at that fight, Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) might pull off the upset against Canelo if he follows the Bivol blueprint.
“You see Ryan Garcia; first, he’s praising Canelo, you want to learn from Canelo, and you’re in Canelo’s training camp. Now it’s all hate,” Floyd Mayweather Jr. said to Fighthype about the back and forth disputes between lightweight contender Ryan Garcia and Canelo Alvarez.
“‘I don’t like him, I don’t like him.’ Accomplish what Canelo has accomplished, then speak bad about him, but you don’t need to speak bad about him no way. We all need to stay in our own lane and do us,” said Mayweather, letting Ryan Garcia know that he needs to pipe down.
Well, Ryan will never accomplish what Canelo has in his career, but that doesn’t mean he can’t make predictions about his fights.
Ryan doesn’t need to capture world titles in four weight classes to predict what Canelo will do against Golovkin or Bivol in their rematch.
It’s likely Ryan, 23, will never be a world champion unless he gets lucky and is put in a position to face a paper champion. Ryan missed his window of opportunity against former unified lightweight champion George Kamboso Jr. because that would have been a winnable fight.
“So you don’t need to speak bad about him no way if you went to his camp to learn from him and to be a student,” said Mayweather. “One thing about Canelo. He’s going to step up to the plate and do what he got to do. He’s going to fight.
“I can’t knock him because he’s going to go down to the Hall of Fame,” said Floyd.
Canelo has become VERY one-dimensional with his offense in the last few years, and his flaws have been disguised because of his focus on mainly fighting weak paper champions from Europe since 2018.
Canelo’s work rate is low, and he plods forward behind a high guard, loading up on single shots. Canelo will lose to David Benavidez because that fighter is a combination puncher, and he’ll do what Bivol did.
