Haney doubts Tank Davis vs. Ryan Garcia happens

Haney says Ryan likes to mention famous fighters in a name-dropping way to promote his fights against no-name opposition. Name dropping is a pathetic strategy that some people use to raise their status artificially without having earned it by achievement.

Devin points out that when Ryan Garcia (22-0, 18 KOs) has a scheduled fight, instead of focusing on the opponent to promote the contest, he’ll begin talking about a big-name fighter that he expects to fight next.

Haney maintains that Ryan gets fans to watch his fights against the no-name by using that method. Instead of Ryan fighting the stars that he’d been talking about, he winds up facing another obscure fighter in a gimme-level match.

It’s unclear whether Ryan is being told to do this or if he learned it from watching other fighters that name drop.

Fighters Ryan Garcia frequently mentions

  • Tank Davis
  • Manny Pacquiao
  • Joseph ‘Jojo’ Diaz
  • Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz
  • Devin Haney

Tank Davis is someone Ryan has repeatedly mentioned as someone he plans on facing, yet the fight never happens.

“I doubt that’ll happen. I don’t think Ryan will fight anybody,” said Devin Haney to MMAFighting, when asked if he believes Ryan Garcia and Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis will fight.

“Of course, he always does that. That’s what he does,” said Haney when told that Ryan Garcia was Tweeting up a storm on fight night during the Kambosos-Haney fight.

Ryan Garcia’s recent opposition:

  • Emmanuel Tagoe
  • Luke Campbell
  • Francisco Fonseca
  • Romero Duno
  • Jose Lopez

“He’ll Tweet up a storm, call all these guys out. The guy [Ryan Garcia] said he was fighting Pacquiao. Come on now.

“The guy uses fighters to promote his fights, and then after he wins his fight against a nobody, and then he goes and fights another nobody,” Haney continued about his thoughts on Ryan Garcia being a name-dropper.

“This is a repetitive cycle for him. I really don’t give him too much attention because I read between the lines. He’s not going to fight anybody. Of course,” said Haney when asked if Tank Davis would beat Ryan if they fought.

“I wasn’t surprised. I never really rated [Rolando Rolly] Romero because I never understood why the world thought he had a chance. Romero hasn’t fought at the top level and hasn’t beaten anybody at the top level.

“He lost to a guy even before he got to the top level, and they gave him the decision,” said Haney about Rolly’s questionable 12-round decision over Jackson Marinez in August 2020. “So, what did he have that made anybody think he could beat Tank other than a punch?

“When you’re at the top, everybody can punch and has power,” said Haney.
