Crawford will take Jermell Charlo fight if Spence doesn’t happen next

By Robert Segal: Terence Crawford already has his perfect plan-B in place against undisputed 154-lb champion Jermell Charlo if the fight with Errol Spence Jr. doesn’t come off at 147 for his next contest.

Crawford (38-0, 29 KOs) hopes the fight with IBF, WBA & WBC welterweight champion Spence can be next because he wants to finish his business at 147.

Terence’s goal is to become a two-division undisputed champion before moving up to 154 in a quest to be a three-division four-belt champion.

Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) could be a problem if he makes the negotiations difficult for Crawford because he’s seemingly been trying to get the Texas native to fight him forever.

If Spence drags his heels and doesn’t want it for whatever reason, Crawford won’t hesitate to move up to 154 to snatch the four belts from Jermell (35-1-1, 19 KOs).

Unfortunately, what Crawford could discover is that Jermell is less willing to fight him than Spence, which puts him in a challenging position where he may wind up getting neither of them.

As the saying goes, ‘Birds of a feather flock together,’ meaning that if Spence doesn’t want the fight with Crawford, it shouldn’t be a surprise if Charlo doesn’t want that smoke either.

With the problems Jermall had in his two fights against a very average Brian Castano, it’s obvious why he wouldn’t want any part of taking on a Crawford and winding up stripped of his straps afterward.

“That’s the plan, ” Crawford said to The DAZN Boxing Show about whether Errol Spence Jr. is the next guy on the agenda. “I think the time right now is the best time because it’s for all the marbles.

“If the fight with [Jermell] Charlo can be taken if the Errol Spence fight doesn’t come to fruition, of course, I’ll take it. I think I match up pretty well.

“I’m very skillful, very strong, I believe in myself, I believe in my abilities, and I believe I match up really well with him.

“Right now, I’m in the process of trying to secure this fight. Everything else can be talked about later,” said Crawford.

“Errol Spence has got three of the titles. I’ve got one. It would be for the undisputed. There wouldn’t be any other champion in the division.

“I feel like this is the biggest moment for us two to fight.”

“Me and Errol have got a different style. We fought Shawn Porter in two completely different styles. You never know.”

“They’ll play a big role in getting us prepared for the biggest fight of our careers,” said Crawford about the respective trainers for both fighters.

“He has Derrick James, and Derrick got him to this point in his career where he’s undefeated, a unified champion, and he got [Jermell] Charlo to be undisputed champion at 154.

“It’s going to be good at seeing them make adjustments in camp and us making adjustments in camp. Let’s see who is going to come out on top.
