Canelo vs. Golovkin 3 = “More brutal for GGG” predicts Bernard Hopkins

By Sean Jones: Bernard Hopkins predicts a more “brutal” fight for Gennadiy Golovkin when he faces Canelo Alvarez on September 17th in their main event bout on DAZN PPV.

Hopkins feels that the Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs) trilogy match will enable Canelo to gain confidence after his “upset” loss to Dmitry Bivool on May 7th.

As far as the Canelo-Golovkin 3 fight, Hopkins warns that fight might not be as exciting as fans think it’ll be. Hopkins says it’ll be “less challenging” for Canelo than the first two contests, and he could be correct.

Ultimately, Golovkin is 40-years-old, and has fought only four times since 2018, and looked poor in two of them in fights against Sergiy Derevyanchenko & Ryota Murata.

It’s believed by some that Golovkin has been in a long holding pattern since 2018, waiting for his well-paying cash-out trilogy match against Canelo, and choosing not to fight risky oppositition

Hopkin, 57, doesn’t see how the Canelo vs. Golovkin trilogy can be any different from the first two fights between the stars in 2017 & 2018, which means we could see another controversial outcome favoring the Mexican star.

“What do you expect to see different?” said Bernard Hopkins to ESNEWS when asked about his thoughts on the Canelo vs. Golovkin trilogy fight on September 17th.

“They know each other, right? When you have that type of setup, normally, you’re not going to see a different show. You’re going to see the same show,” Hopkins continued about the third Canelo – GGG clash.

“It might be a little more brutal for GGG. Look, it’s a fight of names right now. We know who Canelo is, and we know who GGG is.

“But if anybody I’ve been in the ring with, and I think other legends and other fighters that know, it doesn’t take three times to be in the ring with somebody to get to know them and try to figure out something new. You know who that guy is.

“What do you expect to see different? You’re talking about then,” said Hopkins when asked if Golovkin needs to make it an eight-round fight to go for a knockout because he might not get a decision if it goes the full twelve against the popular Canelo.

“It’s four years later, so you can’t be the same guy today,” said Hopkins about Golovkin not being the same fighter that fought Canelo in 2018. “That’s a whole new conversation.

I don’t think it’s going to be as exciting as you might think it will be. I think it will be easier for Canelo to win back a little confidence from the upset that happened recently,” said Hopkins alluding to Canelo’s loss to Dmitry Bivol on May 7th.

“Is it going to be more challenging? Yes, but it will be more mental, more psychological,”  said boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard in Canelo’s third match against Golovkin.

“It’ll be even less challenging than it was for Canelo the first two times,” said Hopkins.
