By Chris Williams: Bill Haney thinks George Kambosos Jr. may attempt to “weasel out” of the rematch with Devin (27-0, 15 KOs) after he gets totally dominated on June 4th in their undisputed lightweight fight in Melbourne, Australia.
Bill says it’s going to be up to Kambosos (20-0, 10 KOs) and his management team to try and convince the boxing public in Australia that it’s worth watching him fight twice.
In Bill’s mind, after the way, Devin totally thrashes the unbeaten unified lightweight champion Kambosos Jr in front of his own Aussie fans, it’s going to be difficult for him to lure those fans back to watch him fight Haney in a rematch.
When a fighter gets royally whipped in front of their own fans, it’s a tough sell to try and peddle the same match-up to the fans.
If it turns out to be an unmitigated disaster for Kambosos, it would be impossible to sell a rematch with Haney. Kambosos would potentially be fighting Haney in front of an empty stadium in Australia for the rematch, and with his career basically on the line.
Getting totally dominated once by Haney would be bad enough, but losing to him twice would be game over for Kambosos. That’s why it was a foolish idea for Kambosos’ team to push for a rematch clause.
Will Kambosos “weasel out” of the rematch?
“Nothing will be able to help George,” said Bill Haney to DAZN Boxing Show.
“As soon as Devin gets through dominating George Kambosos, I don’t want them to get out of paying me twice for the deal that I’ve done,” Bill said. “Do not get George Kambosos out of it, don’t try to weasel out of it.
“I put together the deal because I felt like Devin is the dominant fighter with Kambosos. His team came back and held it over my head and said, ‘We’ve got to do it twice.’
“His [Kambosos] job will just be convincing the people that he’s worthy enough of getting beat twice,” said Bill Haney.
“Devin gets better when facing adversity and this is going to propel Devin to bring out the best in him,” said Bill to ESPN. “I would say that it’s like sending your kid away to college but that wouldn’t be true. It’s a little bit more than that.
“But when it comes to sending your kid away to go to war, then it’s not quite as extensive as that. It’s a whirlwind of emotions that we’ve been going through as a father and son, and as a trainer and a fighter.
“We plan on overcoming this adversity as we have with every time before,” said Bill Haney. “Devin assured me that he was going to go and bring back the belts and it wasn’t going to be any problem,” said Bill when asked when Devin told him when he went on the plane.
“It’s always been a great relationship,” said Bill about his relationship with Yoel Judah the trainer that will be working Haney’s corner in Melbourne, Australia for his fight with Kambosos.
“Zab is Devin’s Godfather. Yoel has been like a grandfather and has been like a father figure to me, both in his boxing game and how we approach life and being 100% behind my son.
“I knew that Yoel was going to be the perfect guy to go to war. I know that Yoel is not going to shy away from that moment. That moment is not going to intimidate him, and he’ll be ready to go to deliver any messages needed to Devin.
“I’m optimistic about me being able to eventually go out there. It’s still up in the air. I haven’t been totally denied but in the event that I’m not able to be there, there have been some suggestions on which way I can talk to him in the corner.
“He’ll be ready, and that’s the main thing that the fighter being ready,” said Bill about Devin.
