By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be fighting an eight-round exhibition match in Dubai against a fighter named Don Moore next month.

The 45-year-old Mayweather Jr (50-0, 27 KOs) will face Moore (18-0-1, 12 KOs) on a helipad in Dubai.

It’s unclear why Mayweather chose the little-known Moore as his opponent rather than a retired, well-known boxer that would attract interest.

With the fight taking place in Dubai, perhaps Mayweather felt it didn’t matter if he fought a good opponent. It’s a little surprising that Floyd would choose to fight a complete unknown.

There are so many former boxers that are around Mayweather’s age that might be open to the idea of fighting him. Again, there would be risk involved in Mayweather fighting a former elite boxer. As such, he’s fighting an obscure fighter with a record filled with ham & egger type of opposition.

Mayweather’s opponent, Don Moore, is reportedly in his 40s, and he hasn’t fought since 2016. His career ran from 1999 to 2016, but unfortunately, he never fought any world-class opposition. He basically fought obscure opposition with poor records.

Don Moore’s last six opponents:

  • DeShaun Williams (5-16-1)
  • Reymundo Hernandez (6-14)
  • Alfredo Guarneros (5-9)
  • Randy Dodds (6-22)
  • Reggie Sanders (12-44-1)
  • Bobby Connors (0-6)

On the undercard, MMA fighter Anderson Silva will fight Bruno Machado. Also on the undercard is former two-division world champion Badou Jack fighting a still to be determined opponent.

Badou, 38, has lately been fighting weaker since suffering back-to-back losses to Marcus Browne and Jean Pascal in 2019.

This will be Mayweather’s first fight since his exhibition match against YouTuber Logan Paul last June 6th in a battle that had no winner declared.

That was a forgettable fight that involved a lot of holding and loud booing due to the lack of action. It’s unclear what the fans expected from Mayweather and Paul. Mayweather is old now and not looking to fight opposition that has a chance of beating him.

Some boxing fans are critical of Mayweather continuing to fight at his age, but he loves the sport.

Mayweather is the equivalent of an aging golfer who can’t give up the sport even though his skills have eroded. It’s excellent that Mayweather can still make millions in boxing for his events.

He hasn’t made a similar killing in the last five years to the massive payday he got for his 2017 boxing match against UFC star Conor McGregor.

At Mayweather’s age, he’s probably too old to hustle a fight against one of the superstar UFC fighters because they’d probably beat him in a boxing match. Mayweather labored against Paul and looked older than his chronological age.
