Mike Tyson tells Jermall Charlo how to call out Canelo Alvarez

By Sean Jones: Mike Tyson gave Jermall Charlo grief this week on his Podcast in questioning him why he’s not already fighting Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez after 14 years in the pro ranks.

Unfortunately, he seemed resistant to the advice Tyson gave him, rejecting his ideas of how to call out Canelo, and showed no interest in fighting David Benavidez.

The famous former heavyweight champion Tyson gave Charlo some tips on how to get the fight with Canelo, saying that he’s “too friendly” and needs to disrespect him to goad him into facing him.

Tyson says Jermall (32-0, 22 KOs) needs to talk about Canelo’s family and mother to upset him to the point where he’ll give him a fight because what he’s been doing hasn’t worked.

Charlo recently missed out on a fight with the former four-division world champion Canelo after the Mexican star rejected PBC’s $100 million+ 2-fight offer to accept Matchroom/DAZN’s two-fight deal to face Dmitry Bivol and Gennadiy Golovkin this year.

Some believe that Canelo got cold feet because the second fight of the two-bout deal from PBC involved him facing David Benavidez. Unlike Jermall,  Benavidez (25-0, 22 KOs) is young at 25-years-old and looks like the best fighter in the 168-lb division.

“Why aren’t you fighting Canelo?” said Mike Tyson at HotBoxin in questioning Jermall Charlo. “Listen, you need to start talking about his mother, his family.

“You’re too friendly. You got to be like Roberto Duran. ‘Give me this, mother f****. Get in the ring. We sign the contract, b****,” said Tyson about him wanting Jermall to insult Canelo to pressure him for the fight,” said Tyson to Charlo.

Tyson is right about Jermall needing to trash-talk and show no disrespect to Canelo Alvarez to try and get a fight against him.

Let’s face it; what Jermall has been doing in tip-toeing around Canelo, showing respect to him during interviews hasn’t worked. Placing Canelo has made Charlo invisible, out of sight, and mind.

In the meantime, Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) has spent the last few years collecting belts from fighters from England, beating the weak no-names one after another in easy-money belt-collecting fights.

Canelo’s entire focus has been to beat paper champions that presented no threat to beating him. Hence, he’s chosen NOT to fight this murderer’s row of killers:

  • Jermall Charlo
  • David Benavidez
  • Demetrius Andrade

That’ll make him [Canelo] mad and not want to fight me. That’s the difference now,” said Jermall Charlo to Tyson.

As you can see, Jermall doesn’t want to say or do anything that he feels would upset the Mexican star Canelo, believing that appeasement is the way to get a fight against him.

Appeasement doesn’t work in boxing and doesn’t work in war. Charlo doesn’t know his history. You can’t smother Canelo with compliments and think he will turn around and give you a fight. Placating Canelo has never worked from a fighter to get a fight against him.

You should be fighting them right now in the best of your prime. You should be calling them out,” said Tyson about Charlo.

When Charlo gave a weak excuse about how he’s BEEN calling out Canelo for the last five or six years, Tyson said, “Then fight the next best guy, the Mexican Monster, Benavidez.

At that point, Jermall gave Tyson a weak answer that had him laughing at him by saying, “He [Benavidez] ain’t got nothing to offer.”

When Charlo said that, Mike Tyson looked at him like he was an alien that had just landed on Earth. Tyson told Jermall that fighters are “scared of him [Benavidez.”

The ex-champion didn’t tell Charlo that he’s also one of the fighters scared of Benavidez, but you could assume that’s what he meant because he had just made a half-hearted excuse for why he’s not trying to fight him. After all, he’s “got nothing to offer.”

That excuse by Jermall would hold water if he’d been fighting quality middleweights in the last five years instead of the weak bunch that he’s been padding his record with since 2017.

Charlo is scheduled to fight Maciej Sulecki in his next fight on June 18th. WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade recently beat that guy by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision.
