Andrade is a tougher fight than Canelo!

By Mohamed Horomtallah: Sampson Lewkowicz, David Benavidez’s promoter, stated in a recent interview that Demetrius Andrade is a tougher fight than Canelo Alvarez. He admitted that they were willing to take a lot less money to fight Canelo than Caleb Plant (who got a $10 million purse) did but insisted that they want much more money than the $7 million check Eddie Hearn offered Jermall Charlo to fight Andrade.

He went on to explain that Andrade is a tougher, more dangerous fight and, therefore, they want the kind of compensation that comes with such a high risk.

I was completely stunned by this, considering the fact that David Benavidez recently welcomed the opportunity to fight Andrade immediately after getting past David Lemieux. Furthermore, he never made anywhere close to $7 million in any of his fights. Not even close.

Why then ask for more money against Andrade and way less money against Canelo, the current cash cow of boxing?

As I was scratching my head, struggling with that very question, the answer suddenly hit me!

These fighters see something in Andrade that takes their confidence away at the thought of sharing the ring with him. It’s as simple as that.

There’s a pattern with respect to Andrade’s potential opponents:

  • Charlo rejected $7 million for a one-fight deal and a chance to win another belt.
  • Canelo rejected $45 million for a one-fight deal.
  • Golovkin rejected a $25 million offer to unify at 160 out of fear of ruining a third Canelo fight.
  • Billy Joe Saunders tested positive for PEDs and was not interested in rescheduling.
  • Jaime Munguia didn’t even want to start any negotiations or activate his mandatory status.
  • And now Benavidez is clearly pricing himself out.

In Charlo’s case, he didn’t make an effort to come up with a good enough excuse for avoiding Andrade contrary to Canelo who claimed that he didn’t fight nobody and labeled him a “horrible, horrible, horrible fighter!”

Andrade didn’t fight nobody because the names at the top floor keep rejecting their biggest purses and a chance to unify in order not to fight him.

I agree with Canelo when he said that Andrade is a horrible fighter. He was actually telling the truth but not in the way you might have imagined.

Andrade is most certainly not a more “horrible fighter” than Avni Yildirim or Rocky Fielding. He is a very skilled boxer with an impressive ring IQ.

What Canelo actually meant was the fact that Andrade’s style was horrible for him because it will make him look bad and that he doesn’t fancy his chances of winning against him.

When it comes to Charlo and Canelo ducking Andrade, I cannot say that I’m all that surprised and I never, ever, expected Golovkin to go for anything else than a soft touch, but with Benavidez, it’s a different story.

I’m a big fan of Benavidez and beyond his skills and what he brings to the table, I am more impressed by his state of mind, his mentality. He always struck me as a true warrior, full of confidence and willing to fight anybody anytime. Anywhere.

I really hope that he’ll reconsider and fight Andrade because he can win. It would be a bad look if he joins the long list of the fighters avoiding Andrade blatantly. Come on, David, not you, champ!

I guess what’s left for me is to put a ton of respect on Andrade’s name. He deserves it. He’s calling out everybody and everybody is running away from him. They don’t like what they see in him. They fear being badly outclassed.

I guess he should change his nickname from “Boo Boo” to just “Boo” because fighters act like they see a ghost at the mention of his name.
