By Ken Hissner: Coming to this writer’s mind are “Sugar” Ray Robinson, Henry “Homicide Hank” Armstrong, Harry “Pittsburgh Windmill” Greb, Sam “The Boston Bonecrusher” Langford, and Willie “Will o’ the Wisp” Pep.

Following the above are Joe “The Brown Bomber” Louis, Muhammad “The Greatest” Ali, Mickey “Toy Bulldog” Walker, Julio “J.C.” Cesar Chavez, Benny “The Ghetto Wizard” Leonard, Joe “Old Master” Gans, Charley Burley, “Sugar” Ray Leonard, Tommy “Hit Man” Hearns to name a few.

Robinson was 174-19-6 with 109 stoppages holding both welterweight and middleweight titles. May have only had a dozen defenses and better at welterweight than middleweight and, like most, stayed around too long.

Armstrong was 149-21-10 with 99 stoppages. He won the featherweight, welterweight, and lightweight titles in that order. That was when there were ten contenders and only one champ.

Greb was 108-8-3 with 49 stoppages, and he fought with one eye. He was the only one to defeat heavyweight champion at light heavyweight Gene Tunney, and he was middleweight champion.

Langford was 178-30-38 with 126 stoppages. The only boxer Jack Dempsey said he feared. He fought from 140 to 170 against the best.

Pep was 229-11-1 with 65 stoppages. He was featherweight champion. He was one of the most difficult to hit.
