Dave Coldwell WON’T train Chisora for Deontay Wilder

By Charles Brun: Trainer Dave Coldwell says he won’t be in the corner of Dereck Chisora if he fights Deontay Wilder because he thinks it’s a bad idea for the 38-year-old to face the former WBC heavyweight champion.

Chisora took a beating in his rematch against Joseph Parker last month on December 18th in Manchester, England. Parker dropped Chisora and had him on the verge of a knockout on four separate occasions during the fight.

If Parker possessed a killer instinct, he would have knocked Chisora out in the fourth round.

Instead of going after him each time he’d get up, Parker stood perfectly still, hesitating as if it were a trap. Parker looked like a shot fighter mentally, whereas Chisora was shot physically.

The judges that worked the Parker vs. Chisora II turned in these horrible scores:

  • 114-112
  • 115-111
  • 115-110

At best, Chisora deserved to win two rounds in the fight, but no more than that. He was eating leather in every round and taking monstrous uppercuts from Parker. The scoring was atrociously bad.

“No, no, no. It’s not something I want to see. I think it’s just too hard a night for him,” said trainer Dave Coldwell to Talksport on a hypothetical fight between former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and the aging journeyman Dereck Chisora. Coldwell wants no part in working Chisora’s corner if Hearn can put a contest together with Wilder.

For Hearn to get Wilder to agree to fight Chisora, he’ll likely need to offer him $10 million minimum, and that’s not going to happen.

Putting the fight on pay-per-view in the UK will bring in some money, but probably not nearly enough to cover the purses for Chisora and Wilder.

Chisora has brought in good numbers for Matchroom in the past, but he’s likely at the end of the line unless Hearn can come up with a great fight that he can peddle to the British fans. You certainly wouldn’t be able to sell a Wilder vs. Chisora albatross fight to the American fans.

No one other than Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has been talking about a fight between Chisora (32-12, 23 KOs) and Wilder (42-2-1, 41 KOs).

Hearn sounded desperate when he mentioned Wilder as a potential opponent for Chisora, but you can see what he’s up against. I mean, what does Hearn do with Chisora? His fights aren’t going to sell at this point unless Hearn can continue to lure former world champions to fight him.

If Hearn starts talking fantasy fights, he shouldn’t stop with a match between Wilder and Chisora. He should throw Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, and Oleksandr Usyk’s in the mix for Chisora in a make-believe fantasy fight.

Wilder’s team hasn’t spoken of wanting to fight the journeyman Chisora because there are zero upsides in fighting him.

The casual boxing fans in the U.S have no idea who Chisora is, so it’s not one that worth putting together because it wouldn’t sell to the Americans, particularly when they see Dereck’s godawful record.

“Derek’s Derek, and he’ll do what he wants to do. It doesn’t matter what anybody says; it’s the same as how he’s been all the way through his career,” said Coldwell about Chisora.

“When it comes down to, ‘Does he fight again or doesn’t he fight again?’ Yes, he will listen to people’s advice when it comes to opponents and things like that, but Derek wants to fight certain people.

“If he wants the fights, then they’ll happen. If I had my way, he wouldn’t be fighting Deontay Wilder, that’s for sure.”

Coldwell doesn’t need to worry about Chisora fighting Wilder because it’s not going to happen. At this point, Hearn will need to aim lower towards fringe level heavyweights. These would be good options for Chisora:

  • Hughie Fury
  • Demsey McKean
  • Zhang Zhilei
  • Efe Ajagba
  • Agit Kabayel
  • Jonathan Guidry
