Caleb Plant calling for Jermall Charlo fight, but Canelo Alvarez has first dibs

By Matt Lieberman: Caleb Plant is pushing for a fight against Jermall Charlo after losing his IBF super middleweight title to Canelo Alvarez in his last contest. Despite getting TKO’d by Canelo last November, Plant is competing with the Mexican star, but differently now.

Instead of fighting him, Plant attempts to outmaneuver the Mexican star by striking quickly, trying to land a massive money clash against Jermall Charlo.

Plant might be able to steal the fight against Jermall right from under Canelo’s nose if the Mexican star moves at his usual glacial pace in negotiating fights.

The hopeful Plant (21-1, 12 KOs), who is with PBC, Tweeted a call out to the unbeaten former two-division world champion Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) on Sunday, letting him know that he would like to face him.

The 14-year professional Jermall, 31, suddenly finds himself in demand after seemingly being avoided by the top dogs at 160 during his career.

Never having been in this enviable position in the past, it’s a new experience for the talented fighter Charlo, as he’s now being pursued by the best fighters that will help carve his legacy and make a fortune.

With Canelo and Plant showing interest in fighting him, Charlo must decide which of these two stars he wants to face next.

Jermall expected to get $15 million fighting Canelo

The payday that Jermall would receive against Canelo would likely be in the neighborhood of $15 million, as this would be a bigger fight than Alvarez’s last match against Plant.

For that fight, Plant reportedly received $10 million. Canelo vs. Charlo will likely create far more interest from boxing fans in the U.S.

Canelo holds ALL the titles at super middleweight as the undisputed champion, meaning that Jermall will need to move up to 168 to challenge him.

However, Charlo recently said that he’s the biggest of the super middleweights, which means that he’d already made his mind up to move up to 168.

Likely, his management had already told Jermall at Premier Boxing Champions that he has an excellent chance of getting the fight against undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) next.

Despite losing to Canelo by an eleventh round stoppage on November 6th, Plant isn’t shying away from fighting elite-level competition.

Plant competing with Canelo for Jermall mega-fight

He’s now ready and actively pushing for the Jermall fight, openly trying to snatch away the mega-fight right from under Canelo’s nose.

Plant wasn’t up to the mark against Canelo inside the ring, but he could prove to be the astute guy outside of the ring by acting fast to negotiate a fight with the unbeaten Jermall.

For Canelo to get the battle with Charlo, he’ll need to stay on top of his manager/trainer Eddy Reynoso to ensure he’s not meandering around at a snail’s pace.
