Kambosos comments on Lomachenko victory, says he’s “in the equation” for next fight

By Sean Jones: George Kambosos Jr. reacted to Vasily Lomachenko’s win over Richard Commey last Saturday night by saying he’s part of the list of four fighters he’s looking at for his next fight in Australia.

Kambosos says that with Lomachenko’s victory over Commey, he now joins this list of fighters:

  • Ryan Garcia
  • Devin Haney
  • Gervonta Davis

Interestingly, Kambosos (20-0, 10 KOs) is whistling a different tune from the one he had last week in which he said this in an interview:

“Like I said, I’ll give him [Lomachenko] the shot,” said Kambosos to Fighthype last week.

It appears the undisputed 135-lb champion Kambosos has changed his mind about conclusively fighting the former three-division world champion Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) next.

Why would Kambosos, 28, change his mind about definitely fighting Lomachenko next?

Well, perhaps it’s the masterclass that Loma put in last Saturday night in dominating the former IBF lightweight champion Commey (30-4, 27 KOs) in winning a one-sided 12 rou9nd unanimous decision at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Kambosos likely would have been badly outclassed by Lomachenko had he been in there with him last night instead of Commey, and it would be one-sided.

Lomachenko looked light years ahead of Kambosos with his masterclass performance against Commey last Saturday night.

What we saw in Kambosos’ win over a depleted weight drained and injured Teofimo Lopez last November wouldn’t have been nearly good enough for the Australian to compete with Lomachenko last Saturday night.

Kambosos needs to let his promoter Lou DiBella pick his next opponent rather than floating names of fighters that he has no intention of fighting to give them false hope.

DiBella will choose the most significant money fight possible for Kambosos, and it’s doubtful that he’s factoring in who he believes he can beat. Frankly, Kambosos’ chances of defeating any of the fighters on his list are low.

Of the four fighters Kambosos mentioned that are in the running for his next, Ryan Garcia is arguably the only one he has a chance of beating. But even Ryan will probably be too talented for him.

As you would guess, Lomachenko will be upset when he learns that Kambosos won’t be fighting him next after all. Lomachenko is counting on getting the fight with Kambosos to become the undisputed lightweight champion.

It’s fair to say that even 34-year-old Commey would soundly beat Kambosos right now. Had that been Kambosos in the ring with Commey last night, he would have likely been knocked out because he would have put hands on him.
