With 2021 drawing to an end, the big time welterweight showdown between Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford still hasn’t come together. But perhaps 2022 will be the year that these two undefeated welterweight kings will finally square off.
Spence is the undefeated reigning unified IBF/WBC welterweight champion, and Crawford is the undefeated reigning WBO welterweight champion. Fan interest in a match up between Spence and Crawford has been growing for a number of years, but despite the intensifying fan interest, the two champions have never reached an agreement to fight.
In his most recent bout from last December, Spence defended his unified welterweight crown after he was awarded a 12 round unanimous decision against Danny Garcia. Spence was supposed to face Manny Pacquiao last August, but Spence had to pull out after suffering a retinal tear, and Yordenis Ugas was Pacquiao’s replacement opponent. Meanwhile Crawford fought last week when he defended his WBO belt against Shawn Porter, winning the fight by 10th round stoppage.
A potential match between Spence and Crawford would undoubtedly be the biggest fight that can possibly be made in the welterweight division at this time, bar none.
Crawford and Spence are both undefeated, they are both in their 30s, they are both arguably in or close to prime form at the weight, and they are both champions who have made 5 successful title defenses at 147. You have two contrasting styles that can potentially make for an epic blockbuster showdown. Boxing fans have wanted this fight for a number of years already, and for various reasons it just never came together.
