By Daniele D’Alessio: In today’s press conference between Chris Eubank Jr (31-2, 23 KOs) and Liam Williams (23-3-1, 18 KOs), the Brighton-born fighter claimed he will “obliterate” the Welshman in their December bout.

Williams was the first to talk about the fight and was surprisingly respectful towards Eubank Jr, describing him as a good fighter and a tough guy. Considering Williams has been sending Eubank Jr various abusive messages on social media, this does not display a lot of confidence.

In contrast, the man trained by Roy Jones Jr was less polite and mentioned how the fight was “personal” for him. Before claiming that the public’s opinion of this being a 50-50 fight, is a shock to him and how he is going to prove that he is levels above Williams.

The truth is Williams’s style is tailor-made for Eubank Jr. He loves it when opponents come at him in a straight line with no head movement and telegraphed power punches. It allows him to do what he does best, which is to unleash vicious, fast combinations.

However, what makes this fight interesting is the potential ring rust that Eubank Jr may have accumulated over the past two years. Despite beating a decent opponent in Matvey Korobov (28-4-1, 14 KOs), his last two opponents Marcus Morrison (24-5, 16 KOs) and Wanik Awdijan (28-2, 11 KOs), were not even on the fringe of world level.

Therefore, a live opponent and someone who is coming to win in his home country may prove to be a shock to the system. Williams is limited, but he has a ton of heart and definitely has power in his punches. There is also the potential for a favorable decision by the judges in Cardiff.

In any case, there is more pressure on Eubank Jr than Williams going into this bout. For years the boxing public has been waiting for him to solidify himself as a world-class fighter, yet he still hasn’t had that breakthrough victory.

James Degale (25-3-1, 15 KOs) is a great name to have on your resume, but Degale was far from his best when they fought and retired shortly after.

Still, a win against Williams will not count as a stand out victory, but if he does it in style via knockout or stoppable, this may indicate that he is ready for the likes of Gennadiy Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs) and Demetrius Andrade (30-0, 18 KOs).
