By  Charles Brun: In a fight that had a strange ending, heavyweight entertainer Alen ‘The Savage’ Babic (9-0, 9 KOs) stopped 39-year-old journeyman/former two-time world title challenger Eric ‘The Drummer Boy’ Molina (28-8, 20 KOs) in the second round on Saturday night at the O2 Arena in London, England.

A tired and unmotivated-looking Molina slipped on the canvas and went down without getting hit in the second round. Incredibly, the referee counted Molina out. What a mess. The time of the stoppage was at 1:30 of round two.

It looked like Molina wanted to catch a breather while he was down after the slip and didn’t seem to realize that referee was giving him a count. I’m not sure if Molina cared at that point because he didn’t look he wanted to be there.

Molina lowered his head to try and clinch Babic earlier in the second round and was nailed with a shot that sent him down. Molina tried to let the referee know that he’d been hit by a rabbit punch, but he wasn’t having any of it and ruled it a knockdown.

Babic dropped Molina with a big right hand in the first ten seconds in the first round, and he barely beat the count. Molina looked genuinely hurt from the knockdown, and I don’t think he saw the right hand that Babic nailed him with, and it bowled him over like a bowling pin.

Molina landed a handful of big right hands shots when he was up against the ropes, and Babic showed a good chin in taking those shots. Had Molina stayed around into the second half of the fight, Babic might have been in trouble because he was getting tagged hard.

With the way Babic fought tonight, he wouldn’t stand a chance against a decent top-tier heavyweight. Molina isn’t a top heavyweight. He’s bascially8 a played-out fighter that was always flawed from day one.

If you saw Molina earlier in his career, he was just as poor in getting blasted out in two rounds by Chris Arreola in the first round in 2012 and Ashanti Jordan in one round in 2007.

Speaking of Arreola, he’d be a good option for Babic to fight in December because it would show whether he’s got enough talent to hang with a fringe contender. I think Babic would likely lose, but he might win.

A victory for Babic over Arreola would put him in position for a nice payday against one of the top heavyweights in the division.

After the fight, Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn said he didn’t think he would be using Molina for any more of his shows after his poor performance.

It was surprising that Hearn used Molina for this card because he had performed terribly earlier this year in March against Fabio Wardley in losing a fifth round knockout.

It looked like Molina was looking for a way out in the Wardley fight. We saw the same thing from Molina in his third round knockout against Filip  Hrgovic in December 2019. Molina folded quickly, doing much in the Hrgovic battle, and that should have been enough for Hearn to be wary of using him for his future fights.

After the fight tonight, the 30-year-old Babic called out British domestic level fighter David Allen, who he’s been compared to often. Babic says he wants to fight Allen (19-5-2, 16 KOs) in his next bout in December.

Allen could be a tough fight for Babic, and he might beat him if he can hang around long enough to land some of his big shots. Babic looks like a knockout waiting to happen, and Allen might be the guy to do it.
