Gervonta Davis says he’d sell out Wembley Stadium in London

By Sean Jones: Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis says he’d sell out the massive Wembley Stadium in London, England, when he fights there someday. The unbeaten Tank Davis (25-0, 24 KOs) has many boxing fans encouraging him to battle undisputed 140-lb champion Josh Taylor in a fight that would be huge for Wembley Stadium.

Tank Davis could potentially bring in some pay-per-view buys if he faces Josh Taylor.

At this point, Tank badly needs to take on a talented guy like Taylor because the 90,000 PPV buys that Oscar De La Hoya’s source is reporting for his last fight against Mario Barrios were dreadfully bad.

With PPV numbers that low, it shows that Tank’s promoters are doing a bumbling job of managing his career and steering it into the rocks.

Davis’ promoter Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions said that he’s planning on coming to the UK, albeit for a “visit.”

Unfortunately, Ellerbe didn’t say anything about the 26-year-old Tank fighting in the UK, which isn’t that surprising because the guy he could face with the popularity needed to sell out Wembley Stadium is Taylor (18-0, 13 KOs).

Will Tank Davis avoid Josh Taylor?

Most boxing fans would agree that Gervonta isn’t good enough to beat Taylor right now based on his performance against WBA ‘regular’ 140-lb champion Mario Barrios on June 26th.

That’s not to say that Tank isn’t capable of beating Taylor in the future. Taylor is 30 right now, and he might deteriorate enough in the next five years for Gervonta to eventually beat him.

However, the boxing public wants to see Tank battle Josh Taylor right now, not when he’s old and past it. We’ve already see Tank moved around Vasily Lomachenko by Mayweather Promotions, showing that they’re purposefully having him avoid the talented Ukrainian two-time Olympic gold medalist.

“I’m working on that as we speak on him coming for a visit. Tank loves the UK fans. He always tells me, “L, can you imagine me fighting at Wembley? I’d sell that b*** out,‘” said Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe on Twitter about Tank Davis.

It’s one thing for Tank Davis to travel to the UK to visit, but it’s a different story if he chooses to go there and take on Josh Taylor. It would require a lot of courage from Tank and particularly his calculated promoters at Mayweather Promotions.

If Mayweather Promotions wants Tank Davis to be one of the true stars in boxing, they can’t do it with tricky match-making by picking out weak paper champions and/or older fighters past their prime.

We’ve seen that with how Tank has been skillfully maneuvered by Mayweather Promotions, being steered against old faded lions like Leo Santa Cruz and Yuriorkis Gamboa, and put in with paper champions like Barrios.

Are Mayweather Promotions ruining Gervonta’s career?

“He’s the guy trending #1 every time he fights; he’s the most talked-about fighter in the sport when he fights, the biggest name/cash cow from 130-140, and one of the highest-paid fighters in the sport at 26,” said Ellerbe in reacting to criticism on social media that Mayweather Promotions are wrecking Tank Davis’s career with their in-house fights and weak match-making.

“Also, selling out everywhere, yeah, we are doing a f**** terrible job.”

You can argue that Tank is succeeding despite the weak match-making that is being done by his promoters, not because of it.

It’s going to look bad if Mayweather Promotions elects not to put Davis in with the best fighters at 135 and 140. It’s safe to say that Tank won’t be returning to the 130-lb division at this point.

Besides it being too hard for Tank to drop down, there’s no one for him to fight. But then again, Tank just proved that he could sell tickets fighting a nobody in Barrios.
