What is the path to greatness for Canelo Alvarez?

Canelo won his first major world championship on March 5, 2011 when he defeated Matthew Hatton by 12 round unanimous decision to win the vacant WBC junior middleweight title. Canelo was just 20 years old. That was a very long time ago. Since that time Canelo has accomplished a great deal.

Fast forward to this past Saturday night, Canelo Alvarez defeated Billy Joe Saunders to expand his claim on the unified super middleweight world championship when he added the WBO to his existing collection that already included the WBA and WBC.

In total Canelo has had 18 bouts where he competed for a major world championship, and in those 18 title fights he only lost once against Floyd Mayweather Jr way back in 2013. That was the only loss in his professional boxing career. Canelo has won major world titles in 4 different weight classes – junior middleweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, and super middleweight. He was a unified champion in 3 of those 4 weight classes, and right now, the only thing preventing Canelo from becoming undisputed at 168 is IBF titlist Caleb Plant.

If Canelo retired tomorrow and never boxed again, he would have already made a tremendous impact in the world of boxing. Canelo also holds a number of notable wins in his career against guys like Erislandy Lara, Miguel Cotto, Daniel Jacobs, Sergey Kovalev, Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, and of course, he holds a victory against Gennady Golovkin.

So how can Canelo improve his overall standing and legacy in boxing?

This edition of Rummy’s Corner will provide some quick thoughts on opinions on what Canelo can try and do over the next 4 or 5 years in order to continue on the path to greatness that he has undergone during his professional boxing career. Please watch and enjoy the video.
