Boxing Results: Joe Joyce stops Daniel Dubois in 10th round KO

By Charles Brun: As I predicted, Joe ‘The Juggernaut’ Joyce (12-0, 11 KOs) exposed Daniel Dubois (15-1, 14 KOs) in outboxing, wearing him down until he quit on a knee in the 10th round on Friday night in their much-anticipated British heavyweight clash behind closed doors at the Church House in London, UK. I hate to say I told you so, but I knew this was going to happen.

No one expected Dubois to quit on a knee, but I’m not surprised at all that he didn’t want anymore. He looked like he was worried about his eye after Joyce hit him hard directly on his closed eye in the 10th.

Once that happened, Dubois looked like he mentally decided to quit to protect his eye. It was similar in some ways in how Lucas Matthysse was stopped in an eye injury to Viktor Postol many years ago.

The heavy favorite Dubois shot his load in the first five rounds, hitting ‘The Juggernaut’ Joyce with everything but the kitchen sink, but he showed no reaction to ANYTHING that Dubois was hitting him with.

Joyce just calmly kept sticking his powerful jab in the face of Dubois, forcing him to eat them repeatedly like they were Horderves. Eating the number of jabs that Dubois was getting hit with was eventually too much for him, as his left eye closed and he looked like a beaten man by the ninth round.

That’s when it was obvious to Charles Brun that Dubois was done. In the 9th, Joyce teed off on the exhausted one-eyed Dubois, who could no longer see properly to try and block Joyce’s power jab.

What was worse than that is the fact that Joyce suddenly started hitting Dubois with right hands, which he hadn’t been doing through most of the fight. When Joyce finally began to have success with his right hand, Duboise looked like he mentally decided, ‘Forget this, I don’t want anymore. I’m quitting.’

Even in the build-up to this fight, you could see a scenario where the inexperienced Dubois would quit at some point because he had never fought anyone even halfway decent during his four-year pro career.

Dubois’ promoter Frank Warren had been matching him with cream puffs one after another all these years, and he NEVER gave him a step up to get him ready for this level of heavyweight.

You hate to say it, but the end result of suddenly putting an inexperienced fighter like Dubois in with a well-seasoned talent like Joyce is what we saw tonight. Dubois wasn’t remotely ready for this, and he suffered a loss because of that lack of experience.

The question is, can Dubois come again and rebuild from this? I don’t think he can. What we’re likely to see is Dubois’ promoter Warren putting him back on a diet of cream puffs for the next year or two before he attempts to line him up for a rematch with Joyce or put him in with a top ten contender.

Unfortunately, we’ll likely see Dubois suffer another knockout when the time comes because he won’t have the experience needed for him to mix it with the top guys.

What Dubois needs is to trim down his physique, lose some of the useless muscle, work on his cardio, and start fighting world-class opposition for a change.

That means no more fights against the likes of Richard Lartey, Nathan Gorman, and Tom Little. Dubois needs to start fighting guys like Alexander Povetkin, Filip Hrgovic, Dillian Whyte, Tony Yoka, and Andy Ruiz Jr if he wants to improve.

There’s a saying, ‘You are what you eat.’ Well, it goes to boxing as well. If you only fight the kind of fodder opposition that Dubois has been facing, you’re never going to improve. Sure, you’re going to look good against the dreadfully poor opposition that you’re being matched against, but you’re going to fall apart like Dubois tonight when your promoter finally lets you fight someone good.
