Terence Crawford says Errol Spence’s style is suited for Danny Garcia

By Chris Williams:  Terence Crawford thinks Errol Spence could be in trouble if he fights Danny Garcia in the same way that he fought Shawn Porter last September.

Spence is capable of boxing his opponents, and he’s not a one-dimensional fighter. He has a better amateur background than Crawford.

Crawford sees the former two-division world champion Danny Garcia (36-2, 21 KOs) as a stronger version of Porter, and he sees IBF/WBC welterweight champion  Spence (26-0, 21 KOs) struggling if he slugs it out.

Spence is capable of beating Danny Garcia by slugging or boxing. We saw Shawn Porter beat Danny Garcia a couple of years ago by going to war with him. Crawford might not be aware of it, but the guys that Danny typically destroys are the limited B and C-level guys.

The only good fighter that Garcia has beaten during his career is Lucas Matthysse. His win over Erik Morales came when the Mexican fighter was in his mid-30s and had moved up three weight classes to fight him.

Crawford: Danny Garcia isn’t a pushover

“I don’t know his status is with his injuries or his health, but all I know is it’s going to be a good fight,” said Crawford to the AK & BARAK show. “Danny Garcia isn’t a pushover as I’ve been telling people.

“You go in there and think you can do what you want with him, and Errol ain’t either, so that’s going to make for a great fight. I wish them both well and the best,” said Crawford.

Danny can punch, but he loses when he faces good opposition. When he stepped it up against Porter and Keith Thurman, he lost. We already saw Spence beat Porter by fighting his own game.

Most would agree that Spence would beat Keith Thurman. As such, it’s academic that Danny Garcia has very little chance of beating Spence no matter how he fights. Interestingly, Crawford isn’t willing to admit that, but it’s also not surprising. After all, Spence is a rival of his.

The way Crawford is talking, it sounds like he’s coming from up high talking down to Spence. That doesn’t sit right, given that Crawford hasn’t proven that he’s better than him. Also, with Crawford’s weak resume, he’s not in the position to pontificate. Until Crawford beats someone good, he needs to be in the background.

Spence’s fighting style suits Garcia

“The way Errol fought Shawn Porter, I kind of think it suits Danny’s style better because I feel like Shawn is a more rugged type of strength than Danny, but I think Danny is more sturdier and punches harder,” said Crawford.

“Shawn has got that bull strength, and Danny has got that, ‘You’re not pushing me back strength. It’s going to be exciting to watch because Errol has got that same strength as Danny,” said Crawford.

‘I’m going to out-power you and out-will you and outpunch you,” said Crawford. “So now it comes down to who is going to out-will and who is going to take who’s punch better. Both of them can box at the same time. So it’s going to make for an exciting fight,” said Crawford on the Spence vs. Garcia clash.

Crawford is lost with his analysis on Spence vs. Garcia. Spence’s style works for him against a limited guy like Danny seven days a week, 365 days a year. If Spence wants to go to war, he’ll likely stomp Danny.

I don’t think Spence will slug with Garcia though because he’s coming off of a car crash, and he’ll want to prove to [people that he can box. That’s bad news for Danny because he’s not the greatest boxer.

It’s still early yet for WBO welterweight champion Crawford to be giving his thoughts on the Spence vs. Garcia fight. That match-up hasn’t even been made yet, and it’s unclear when it will be.

With Spence talking about wanting the Garcia fight to be shown on pay-per-view, we might not see that match for years. That fight isn’t going to sell on pay-per-view with the economy the way it is now.

You can’t sell PPV to unemployed people. That doesn’t work. If Spence wants to fight Garcia on pay-per-view, he may need to wait a while for the economy to rebound.
