Ryan Garcia fires back at Gervonta Davis – ‘I want my shot’

By Chris Williams: Ryan Garcia is really pushing Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis hard trying to get a fight against him. Earlier on Monday, Tank Davis (23-0, 22 KOs) calmly told the young upstart Garcia (20-0, 17 KOs) to “relax Lil man” when he was acting needy in begging for a fight.

Ryan, 21, didn’t like being called “Lil man,” he fired back at WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Tank Davis, saying he wants his title shot. The problem is Ryan is only ranked #2 with the World Boxing Association, and he’s still behind #1 WBA Robert Easter Jr.

Still too early to make Tank Davis vs. Garcia fight

If Tank Davis gave Ryan a title shot right now, it wouldn’t be as big a fight as it could be later on down the road after the fight has marinated for 2 or 3 years. However, Garcia is looking increasingly more one-dimensional with each fight, and all he does is throw left hooks now.

With the poor opposition that Garcia has been matched with by Golden Boy Promotions, he hasn’t had to develop a jab or his right hand the way normal fighters do. Instead, all he does is throw left hooks, and he’s become a one-trick pony.

Tank Davis wants Ryan Garcia to wait for a title shot

Ryan hasn’t earned his title shot against either Tank Davis or WBC champion Devin Haney, but he wants the title shot to be given to him on a silver platter all the same.

Here’s how the day started with Garcia complaining about wanting to be GIVEN a title shot against Tank Davis:

  • Ryan Garcia: “Gervonta Davis I want to Fight Now let’s not wait!”
  • Tank Davis: “Lol, relax Lil man. It’s gonna come & you know it like I know it!”
  • Ryan Garcia:  “I know you aren’t calling anyone little man. I want my shot at your fake a– title, I want to prove to the world I’m the real champ.”

As you can see here, Garcia isn’t too interested in waiting for a world title shot against WBA 135-lb champion. He wants the fight NOW. Tank probably wants what everyone else wants and that’s for Ryan to start fighting good competition so he can prove himself worthy of a title shot.

Golden Boy Promotions top dogs Oscar De La Hoya and Eric Gomez were hoping to set up a fight between Ryan and former three-division world champion Jorge Linares for July at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Garcia needs to prove himself against Linares

Ryan’s dad/trainer Henry Garcia is sounding negative to that idea, complaining that boxing fans won’t give him credit for beating the 34-year-old Linares, and will say that he was “old.” Ryan’s dad says that he’s been fighting guys in the “zenith” of their careers, which may be true, but they’re not great fighters, unfortunately.

Ryan would receive more credit from boxing fans if he fought Linares, and beat him. Of course, there’s a very good chance Linares would beat Ryan, and that could be the season why his father isn’t excited about making the fight. It’s easier for Ryan to beat up on guys like Francisco Fonseca and Romero Duno than face a talented guy like Linares, where things might not work out well for him.

Ryan Garcia’s last seven opponents:

  • Francisco Fonseca
  • Romero Duno
  • Jose Lopez
  • Braulio Rodriguez
  • Carlos Morales
  • Jayson Velez
  • Fernando Vargas Parra

Garcia is fighting opposition that is mostly in their 20, but they’re not in the same league as Linares.
