Jermall Charlo: ‘I WANT the Canelo fight’

By Chris Williams: Jermall Charlo has confirmed that he was given an offer by Eddie Hearn for a unification fight against WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade, but the offer wasn’t strong enough. He sent the offer to his adviser Al Haymon, who told him not to respond to it,  said Jermall in an interview with @SiriusXMBoxing.

WBC middleweight champ Charlo (30-0, 22 KOs) says the fight that he wants is against WBC Franchise champion Canelo Alvarez. That’s the one that Jermall cares about. Jermall says that he doesn’t hear anyone talking about Demetrius Andrade, Danny Jacobs or Gennadiy Golovkin.

The only name Charlo hears is ‘Canelo,’ and that’s the one he wants. Charlo feels that he and Canelo have to fight eventually. To make that contest possible, Charlo says he’s got to keep winning.

Charlo: Eddie Hearn’s offer wasn’t strong enough

“The only thing true about Eddie Hearns is he’s reaching out, alright? That’s all I can say,” said Charlo to the AK and Barak Show on SiriusXMBoxing. “He’s only reaching out so he can not look like the clown…He’s reaching out, but he doesn’t really want to make that move, you know?

“Let’s break the ice, bro. And let’s keep it 100, because I don’t do interviews,” said Charlo. “You’re my only interview. I haven’t done an interview with nobody, and I don’t do interviews, because they change your words, and they make you look like you’re not whatever.

“All I do is take care of my kids, and have fun. Eddie Hearn has reached out, he’s not lying about that. He has reached out,” Charlo continued.

“The offer wasn’t strong enough. I forward the s— straight to Al [Haymon], command team, the headquarters,” said Charlo about Hearn’s offer for a fight against Andrae. “They know what’s going on. I’m told not to respond, and I’m told not to even feed into none of that s—. So basically I’m the WBC champ. I want to be the Franchise champ,” said Charlo.

The problem that Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has is he probably can’t come up with a big enough offer to lure Charlo to face Andrade (29-0, 18 KOs), because it’s not a big that would bring in a lot of money. Andrade isn’t a star, and he fights on DAZN.

Charlo to Canelo Alvarez: “Eventually we’re going to fight’

“We don’t even got to fight for no belts,” said Charlo about Canelo.  “Look, Alvarez Canelo, know who I am. That’s all I need to know. He know who I am. I keep doing my job. Eventually, we going to get in the ring. Obviously, everyone in this world are waiting on this fight.

“Canelo is the champ, and Canelo is who everyone else is talking about,” Jermall said. “I don’t hear nobody else saying, ‘Demetrius Andrade’ or ‘Danny Jacobs’ ‘Golovkin’ anymore. All I hear is Canelo, so all I want to do is fight the best in the world. Look, I want to feed my family like I told you.

“I’m going to go in there and put up. I’m 29, and Canelo is 29. We’re both in our prime. Look, I’m 30-0. I’ve got enough accolades to fight him. I’m the WBC champ. I want that s— to happen just as much as you. But as soon as I take a fight off of this contract, they’re going to say, ‘you’re already tied into a fight.’ That’s what’s been going on for the last couple of years,” said Charlo.

It might be a mistake on Charlo to assume that he’s going to get a fight against Canelo one of these days, because he’s been a pro for 12 years, and the fight STILL hasn’t happened. If you haven’t fought Canelo after 12 years, there’s a high possibility that you won’t ever fight him.

Charlo has a number strikes against him that will potentially prevent him from ever getting a fight against Canelo. Those are as follows:

  • Charlo fights on Showtime, and Canelo with DAZN
  • The size and power of Jermall
  • Boxing ability
  • Not popular enough

Jermall says Canelo fight WILL happen

“At the moment, I’m standing still, not tied down, and ready to fight whoever,” said Jermall. “But I’m not pressured to throw. I’m making hell of good money. I know you don’t know that, because you don’t know what we’re making. You have an idea of what we’re making, but you don’t know what we’re making, bro.

“I’m making hell of good money, and I’m going to stay chill until it’s time to fight,” Charlo said. “Bro, I’m not injured. I haven’t sustained any injuries. I’m healthy, young and hungry. It’s going to happen,” said Jermall about a fight against Canelo. “I want the fight. I want every fight out there. Yes sir, I want the fight. Make the offer right, that’s all I’m saying.

“They cannot deny a great offer. I got to keep winning,” said Charlo when asked what he needs to do in order to make the fight with Canelo happen. I got to keep focused, and keep providing for my family. The fight is going to happen. If I let any of that down, then I let you feed into what really should be happening, bro,” said Charlo.

Jermall needs to schedule a fight already because he’s not one of the guys that are in the running for Canelo’s May 2 fight. Standing still would be fine if Charlo was one of the three guys that Canelo and Golden Boy Promotions are considering for his next fight. They’re looking at Billy Joe Saunders, Callum Smith and Caleb Plant.

Charlo ready to retire from boxing

“I’m 29, I’ve been boxing my entire life, and I’m ready to retire,” said Charlo. “Make that s— happen. I’m going to start preparing my retirement preparation and s—. I’ve done more in boxing than any of those other fighters you’ve named but Canelo. I don’t know,” said Charlo when asked what offer it’s going to take for him to agree to a fight with Canelo.

“I’m not going to tell you what I’m making. Give me a real offer, bro,” said Charlo. “Shoot me a real offer. We’re not going to do no catchweight. And we’re not going to do no fake belt or none of that s—. We’re going to make that s– rock. I was mad as hell,” said Charlo when asked what he felt when the

“WBC came out with the Franchise belt and made Canelo their champion,” Jermall said. “I think it’s another evolution of boxing. Maybe the Franchise belt can evolve like the NBA where the NBA only has one champion, and like everyone in football goes to one Super Bowl, where we can start a union and take care of real fighters that put their life on the line, and get nothing behind it. Let’s go back to the old days of boxing where a loss doesn’t define your career,” said Charlo.

If Jermall is already talking about retirement at 29, then he’s definitely not going to be getting a fight with Canelo. Basically, Charlo’s best chance of getting a fight against Canelo is to keep winning, and wait 2 to 5 years to see if he eventually gets picked out by the Mexican star.
