By Chris Williams: In disappointing news, WBA ‘regular’ lightweight world champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (23-0, 22 KOs) has been charged with simple battery domestic violence following video that shows the 25-year-old having an argument with the mother of his daughter during a charity basketball game last Sunday in Coral Gables, Florida, according to ESPN.

Tank Davis has subsequently been charged with simple battery domestic violence earlier today on Tuesday. Davis, who is promoted by Mayweather Promotions, turned himself into the Coral Gables Police Department.

Video of Davis’ altercation has spread around Youtube

The short video clip that was filmed by someone with a cell phone camera has gone viral on Youtube, showing Davis confronting a sitting woman and then snatching her by the arm, and then walking her out of the arena. The way Davis grabbed her was in a forceful way. None of the nearby people sitting stepped in to intervene.

“As a result of an ongoing investigation after being notified through social media and the victim, on February 1, 2020, (Davis) was observed battering his former girlfriend (with) whom have a child together,” Coral Gables police said via ESPN.com. “(Davis) surrendered himself to Coral Gables police detectives assigned to the case.”

Before deleting his Twitter account, Gervonta posted this message:

“I never once hit her, yea I was aggressive and told her come on… that’s the mother of my child I would never hurt her other than that happy New Years.. January was trash.”

Davis not impressive in beating Gamboa

Tank Davis recently made his debut at lightweight in defeating injured Yuriorkis Gamboa by a 12th round knockout on December 28 to win the vacant WBA 135-lb title in Atlanta.

Gamboa, 38, tore his right Achilles tendon in the 2nd round after he was knocked down. The 2004 Olympic gold medalist Gamboa fought the rest of the way limping until being stopped in the 12th.

Davis was criticized by a lot of boxing fans for the way he seemed fatigued during the fight, and the fact that it took him a long time to stop the hobbling Gamboa. Davis dropped Gamboa 3 times in the fight.

There was talk of Gervonta taking on Leo Santa Cruz in his next fight on pay-per-view. It’s unknown if that fight will take place or not. It’s a match that wouldn’t be the greatest for pay-per-view, as neither fighter has established themselves as big enough stars yet.  The fans want to see Davis fight Vasiliy Lomachenko, not Santa Cruz.
