Jermall Charlo vs. Demetrius Andrade – Eddie Hearn wants this fight in 2020

By Tim Royner: Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing has revealed that he’d made a one-fight offer to WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo (30-0, 22 KOs) to fight on DAZN against WBO 160-lb champion Demetrius ‘Boo Boo’ Andrade (28-0, 17 KOs) in a unification fight in 2020. Hearn says it would just be a one-fight deal, so that Charlo could then return to Fox.

The Matchroom boss Hearn points out that Andrade, 31, and Charlo have been unable to get the big fights. So he thinks it’s a great idea for them to face each other, and then the winner moves on to bigger and better things.

Hearn says Charlo could potentially face Canelo Alvarez on DAZN if he beats Andrade, but he obviously would have no way of guaranteeing that fight takes place.

Andrade is defending his title next month #2 WBO Luke Keeler (17-2-1, 5 KOs) on January 30 on DAZN at the Meridian at Island Gardens, in Miami, Florida. There’s not likely to be much interest from U.S boxing fans in seeing Andrade fight the 32-year-old Irish fighter Keeler. This is just another low level fight for Andrade, who’s career has largely been against weak opposition.

Hearn makes Jermall Charlo offer to fight Demetrius Andrade

“We just made Jermall Charlo a massive offer to fight Demetrius Andrade in a unification fight,” said Hearn. “It’s a one fight deal. If we can bring these fighters in. Jessie [Vargas] has always had a fight by fight deal with PBC. Now he has a fight by fight deal with us.

The only difference is we have matching rights moving forward,” said Hearn. “We’re not going to let him go. For me, it’s a multi-fight deal, but we’ve got to deliver for him. Jermall Charlo can’t get a big middleweight without fighting on DAZN. So let him do that, and if he wants to stay on DAZN and fight Canelo after, he can. And if he wants to go back to Fox, let him do that,” said Hearn about Charlo.

“At the moment, I can’t deliver Andrade the mega-fight that he needs,” said Hearn. “I’ve tried, but the guys aren’t queuing up to fight him. Last week and this week, I made Jermall Charlo a huge offer, a one-fight deal to come and fight Demetrius Andrade on DAZN. He can have a multi-fight or he can have one fight, whatever he wants. It’s kind of like those guys need each other,” said Hearn.

It’s highly unlikely that Jermall will accept Hearn’s offer to fight Andrade, because he’s loyal to Premier Boxing Champions. Besides that, that’s not a big fight for Charlo. There’s no gain for Charlo in fighting Andrade, because that fighter hasn’t been matched against popular fighters during his career. Due to the soft match-making and the inactivity that Andrade has, he’s basically invisible in the eyes of a lot of casual boxing fans in the U.S.

Charlo with nothing to gain in fighting Andrade

If Charlo beats Andrade, there’s no gain. Actually, it would be more of an anchor for Charlo’s career if he beats Andrade, because he would be stuck defending two 160-lb titles instead one. The negative in Charlo defending two belts is he’ll get stuck with defending against the World Boxing Organization’s mandatory challengers. They don’t have any big names in their top five other than Daniel Jacobs, and he just left the middleweight division. The WBO has been slow in removing his name from their rankings.

These are the WBO’s top 5:

  • Alantez Fox
  • Luke Keeler
  • Daniel Jacobs – He’s no longer fighter at 160
  • Michael Zerafa – beaten this week by Jeff Horn
  • Kanat Islam

Jermall and Andrade have few options say Hearn

“Charlo has no one to fight, and no one really wants to fight Andrade,” said Hearn. “So you’ve got go give Charlo all the money to say, ‘Come and fight with us and fight Andrade. Because Andrade is going to miss the boat in his prime to have these kinds of fights.

“You’ve got Golovkin coming off the fight of the year against [Sergiy] Derevyanchenko,” said Hearn about GGG. “He’s got a mandatory [Kamil Szeremeta], and then he’ll probably go and fight Canelo. Demetrius DOES needs tht marquee fight, but it’s not for the want of trying,” Hearn said.

Hearn hasn’t done much for Andrade since signing him. Although he’s keeping him busy, he’s failed at luring Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin into facing him. Andrade is a southpaw, and he does a lot of spoiling. Those fighters aren’t going to likely ever want to fight Andrade, because of the way he fights and his lack of popularity.

Canelo and GGG has given up on trying to unify divisions, since it forces them into making a lot of mandatory defense against no-names that the U.S boxing fans have no interest in seeing.

WBC champion Charlo has arguably better contenders for him to face than Andrade. In the WBC’s top 5, Charlo has these fighters:

  • Sergey Derevyanchenko
  • Jaime Munguia
  • Daniel Jacobs
  • Kamil Szeremeta
  • Esquivia Falcao

Hearn predicts Canelo’s next fight

“The feeling I get is Canelo Alvarez’s next fight will come from Demetrius Andrade, Callum Smith and Billy Joe Saunders,” said Hearn. “Probably the last two, because I think he’ll want to fight at 168. So if he doesn’t fight Smith or Saunders, they’ll fight each other in a unification fight. Joshua has got Pulev or Usyk. Gennadiy has his mandatory in [Kamil] Szeremeta. Canelo is going to fight Billy Joe or Callum Smith,” said Hearn.

It’s unlikely that Canelo will fight Andrade, but he’s probably going to fight one of Hearn’s guys  in his next bout. Although fans won’t want to see Canelo fight one of the three that Hearn mentioned, he’ll probably do it, because he’s not showing much desire to face the dangerous guys.

Canelo is expected to face WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders next, and the subscription numbers on DAZN will likely be LOW like they were when the Mexican star fought Rocky Fielding last year. If this is just about Canelo making sure he wins, then Saunders is the perfect guy. Canelo can definitely beat this guy. Saunders was getting beaten little fringe contender Marcelo Esteban Coceres in his last fight on November 9 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Saunders came on to stop Coceres in the 11th round, but he appeared to be losing the fight.
