By Aragon Garcia: Saul Canelo Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions have announced the next fight for Saul against WBO 175-lb champion Sergey Kovalev for November 2. The Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez (52-1-2, 35 KOs) will be vying to become a four division world champion against the 36-year-old Kovalev (34-3-1, 29 KOs) on DAZN at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Kovalev almost out his opportunity to fight Canelo last month when he had to scrap hard to beat WBO mandatory Anthony Yarde (18-1, 17 KOs) by an 11th round knockout in Russia.

Canelo giving boxing fans the fight they want to see

With Canelo choosing to put his trilogy fight against Gennady Golovkin on hold, Kovalev was the ideal opponent for him to fight against. There was no one else with a big enough name for Canelo to fight at 160 and 168, so he opted to go to 175 to look for a big name. Kovalev is the ideal opponent for Canelo to fight, because he’s well known, and has an exciting fighting style. Although Kovalev isn’t the same guy he once was seven years ago, he’s still an excellent fighter with big power in both hands.

De La Hoya chimes in on Canelo vs. Kovalev fight

“We promised to make this fight happen, and now we are delivering it,” said Canelo’s promoter De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions. “Historic fights have been a hallmark of this company, and we are pleased to once again live up to the high expectations we’ve set for our fans. The best pound-for-pound fighter is also boxing’s biggest star.

Few fighters in boxing’s history can claim to be both like Canelo Alvarez. Now, he’ll look to become a four-division world champion against one of the most dangerous fighters of recent years, and I’m certain that he will stop him. There’s no better home for this than on the DAZN platform or live at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.”

Canelo, 29, has recently won the IBF/WBA/WBC middleweight titles with wins over Golovkin and Daniel Jacobs. Last December, Canelo beat WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion Rocky Fielding to become a 3-division world champion.

Saul Alvarez said this on social media announcing Kovalev fight:

“CaneloKovalev It’s official. I am happy to announce that I will climb 2 categories to face one of the most powerful rivals in this division. This November 2 will be one of the biggest challenges of my career. Let’s make history together. Let’s go for 4x World Champion
@DAZN_USA.”

This will give the fading Kovalev a good retirement payday before he bows out of the game. Kovalev appears to be on his last legs, and might not be around as world championship level fighter for too much longer.
