By Mark Eisner: Lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (29-0-1, 20 KOs) had to battle hard to defeat a game Otto Wallin (20-1, 12 KOs) by a surprisingly wide 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday on ESPN at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The scores were 116-112, 117-111, and 118-110.

Boxing news 24 had the fight scored a draw at 114-114. Fury, 31, appeared to give away the first six rounds against a motivated Wallin. In round 12, Wallin wobbled Fury with a big left hand.  Wallin fought well enough to win 7 rounds.

Fury suffers terrible cut in 3rd round

In round 3, Fury suffered a bad cut over his right eye from a left hand by Wallin. The cut worsened as the rounds went by. Fury seemed to be under the impression that the cut was from a clash of heads.  If the fight had been stopped due to the bleeding, Fury would have lost the fight. As bad as the cut was, the fight should have been arguably been halted. It was a terrible cut, and it’s surprising that the ringside doctor let Fury go the entire 12 round distance without stopping it.

This cut will likely take a long amount of time to heal. Fury is signed to fight a rematch with WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder on February 22. That’s five months from now. It’s possible that the cut could be healed by then, but there will be scar tissue around his right eye that could easily be reopened once Wilder starts landing right hands on the eye. If Fury’s cut reopens against Wilder in February, he’ll likely lose, because he won’t survive getting nailed right big right hands.

Even before Fury was cut tonight, he looked sluggish, weak and poor. He was fighting a lot like Hughie Fury in spoiling, and showing no power at all. It’s possible that Fury trained too hard for the fight, and left his game in training camp.

Top Rank needs to consider rescheduling Fury vs. Wilder rematch

Fury’s promoters at Top Rank might want to consider rescheduling the rematch with Wilder for April or May of 2020. With that bad cut, Fury’s right eye is going to need a lot of time to heal.

Wallin gassed out after the 6th, and appeared to lose rounds 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11. In the 12th, Wallin showed a new boost of energy, and went after Fury with left hands. He wobbled Fury with a big left to the head. Wallin continued to nail Fury with hard jabs, right hooks and straight lefts for the remainder of the round. Fury was too hurt to throw anything in the round. He was just holding, and trying to survive.

Fury was the A-side tonight, so that put Wallin in the position where he would have needed to drop him a few times to get a draw or a win.

Carlos Cuadras shines

Cuadras, 5’4″, did a good job of closing the distance to land scoring shots on the lanky 5’9″ Cardenas.  The win for Cuadras was his third consecutive since losing to McWilliams Arroyo last year in February in a 10 round majority decision. Cuadras has showed a great deal of improvement since his loss to Arroyo last year. The way he fought tonight, he would have given Arroyo and Juan Francisco Estrada problems.
