By Tim Royner: Hughie Fury’s trainer/father Peter Fury says he’s going to be looking to throw multiple combinations against Alexander Povetkin (34-2, 24 KOs) in their co-feature bout this Saturday night on the Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. Luke Campbell card at the O2 Arena in London, England.

Peter wants Hughie to throw as many as 7 punches in a row with his combinations against the 39-year-old Povetkin. High volume combination punching is how he believes the 6’6″ Fury will beat Povetkin, and he’s ready to have him implement that plan.

This is a complete change for Hughie from how he normally fights. What he normally does is crank up on his right hands, and then flee after throwing the shot. When Hughie does stick around, he’s wrapping up his opponents in a clinch.

Povetkin had his game face on today in his public workout in London. He looks in superb shape, and ready to take Fury apart on Saturday night.

Fury (23-2, 13 KOs) doesn’t have the power to stand and trade with Povetkin for a sustained amount of time without putting himself in danger.

Peter: Hughie must be prepared to throw 5-7 punches in a row

“It’s going to be intense and he’s got to be prepared to let his hands go, and maybe five, six, seven shots got at a time,” said Peter Fury to skysports.com. “I’m looking forward to him now taking that next step. He can go 12 rounds, we’ve seen that many times, he does the distance very well, but I want to see more aggression out of him, I want to see him more on the front foot, more crowd pleasing. To do that, he’s got to put his hands up, take a few and give a few. That’s the way it is,” said Peter.

The 24-year-old Hughie must do something to give himself a shot at beating Povetkin, because he’s not going to win by running around the ring all night. The way that Hughie has fought recently against Samuel Peter, Kubrat Pulev and Joseph Parker, it’s not going to get the job done on Saturday. The 38-year-old former WBC heavyweight champion Peter (38-8, 31 KOs) was getting the better of Hughie on the inside in their fight on July 12 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. If not for Peter gassing out and suffering a shoulder injury, he likely would have won the fight.

There’s a big upside for Hughie if he wins this fight, but he’s not going to do it if he follows Peter’s advice of throwing sustained combinations.
