By Logan Garcia: World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman congratulated new WBC middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez for his victory over WBA/WBC 160 pound champion Gennady Golovkin last Saturday night.

Canelo (50-1-2, 34 KO) came into the fight the underdog, but came away with a close win with a lot of hard work along the way in winning a 12 round majority decision by the scores 114-114, 115-113 and 115-113.

Sulaiman now has a highly marketable fighter as his WBC middleweight champion after a 2-year absence. Canelo held the prestigious WBC 160 pound title in 2015 and 2016, but he gave it up to go after the WBO junior middleweight title. Now the WBC belt is back in Canelo’s hands, and Sulaiman seems very pleased.

Golovkin’s fans have had a hard time coming to terms with their hero losing to Canelo. It was a fair decision. A lot of them have been denying the loss, saying that GGG deserved the win rather than Canelo. It’s a typical response that one sees from fans that are bitterly disappointed when their hero loses to the better man. Golovkin got beat up by Canelo from start to finish. After the fight was over, GGG ran out of the ring rather than sticking around to be interviewed by HBO, who he was contracted to. There was no denying that Golovkin lost the fight. All you had to do was look at his face. He looked like he’d been in a train wreck against Canelo. It’s fair to say that Alvarez beat the living daylights out of Golovkin, and sent him on his way back down to the contender status.

Golovkin and his trainer Abel Sanchez had to eat some humble pie after 12 months of continue trash talking. They both meekly said they wanted a trilogy fight with Canelo, but that’s not going to happen. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De L Hoya laid down the law to them by saying that if Triple G wants a third fight with the 28-year-old Alvarez, he’s going to need to rebuild his image by winning some fights. De La Hoya isn’t going to make a third fight between them right now because it’s a fight that can’t be sold. Golovkin looked bad in losing for a third fight to get made against Canelo. Golovkin put dark glasses on when he came out for the post-fight press conference unlike Canelo, who faced the boxing media with no shades and not looking marked up. Looking at the two fighters, it’s clear who won the fight.

Canelo has other fish to fry in his next fight in December. He could fight David Lemieux, a former IBF middleweight champion. There are already a lot boxing fans excited at the prospects of seeing Canelo and Lemieux (40-4, 34 KOs) face each other in three months from now in December. If GGG wants another fight, then he needs to beat a name like Jermall Charlo.
