By Jeff Aranow: Gennady Golovkin and his trainer Abel Sanchez took a not so subtle shot Golden Boy Promotions star Saul Canelo Alvarez with their new Jordan advert. In the commercial, Sanchez is eating a plate of steak while Golovkin is working out. Sanchez then says this:

”Super human power requires a special ingredient and it’s called, ‘Hard work.’”

It looks like Team Golovkin is off to an early start hyping the September rematch with Canelo Alvarez. There’s five more months to go before the Canelo-Golovkin 2 rematch. You can expect a lot subtler digs from Golovkin at Canelo before then.

The commercial appears to be Golovkin’s way of getting under the skin of the 27-year-old Canelo for his contaminated meat excuse that he’s blaming his two positive tests for the banned substance clenbuterol. Canelo’s positive tests for the performance enhancing substance led to him pulling out of the May 5th rematch with Golovkin.

Canelo will be meeting with the Nevada State Athletic Commission this week on Wednesday at a hearing on the positive tests. Canelo is expected to be suspended at that time for 6 to 12 months. What would be really surprising is if Canelo is cleared by the Nevada Commission based on his contaminated meat excuse. But even if Canelo is cleared, he still likely won’t fight until September, as he only fights twice a year now on the Mexican holidays in May and September.

Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler said last Sunday that results of Canelo’s hearing on April 18 with the Nevada Commission could have a bearing for GGG’s next fight. Loeffler didn’t come right out and say it, but it’s possible that Golovkin wills scrap his May 5th fight date on HBO, and instead wait until the rematch with Canelo takes place in September. There’s a very real possibility that Golovkin will go in that direction, because if he fights on May 5th, he could have his IBF middleweight title stripped from him by the International Boxing Federation due to him failing to face his IBF mandatory challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko on that date. But if Golovkin sits and waits until the Canelo rematch in September, he’ll get to keep his IBF title. Canelo is Golovkin’s WBC mandatory, so it’s not a voluntary defense. Derevyanchenko would need to wait until after Golovkin and Canelo face each other in September before he can get a title shot.

There’s not much money for Golovkin to make for the May 5th fight due it being off HBO PPV because of the potential for a non-star to be his opponent. Team Golovkin is not interested in Derevyanchenko for the May 5 fight date. The only serious option right now is junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan, who the casual and hardcore boxing fans are not interested in seeing as an opponent for Golovkin.
