By Scott Gilfoid: Hughie Fury (20-0, 10 KOs) had his chance to fight for the heavyweight world title against WBO champion Joseph Parker (23-0, 18 KOs), but instead he backed out of the fight and sat on the sidelines as he struggled to defeat his former sparring partner Razvan Cojanu (16-3, 9 KOs) on Saturday night at the Sparks Arena in Auckland, New Zealand.

Hughie, 22, had a back ailment that kept him from taking on the hard hitting 25-year-old Parker. There’s no word about when Hughie’s back problem will heal up. But in the meantime, young Hughie will talk about the fight that got away from him, as if it were a big fish that he failed to land. Hughie was so close to reeling in that fish to become a world champion, but at the last minute, a back problem flared up and caused him to pull out.

As the saying goes, ‘the mind was willing but the flesh was weak.’ One can hope that Fury doesn’t continue to pull out of fights in the future.
What Hughie has going for him right now is the WBO still having him as the mandatory challenger for Parker. Hughie could have a fight for the WBO title rescheduled at some point in the near future.

It would be in Hughie’s best interest if that fight can be rescheduled for Parker’s next fight instead of afterwards. It might even be good for Parker too, because it would mean he could fight the light hitting 6’6” Hughie rather than facing someone like Dillian Whyte, who has a little more pop in his punches. I think Whyte DEFINITELY beats Parker without a doubt. With Hughie, I think Parker would still have a better than average chance of winning that fight. I’m not as sure though now than I was before Parker fought Cojanu. Parker looked TERRIBLE against Cojanu.

If Parker took it easy on Cojanu due to him having been his sparring partner in the past, then I would give him a break, but we don’t know that was the case. It looked to me like Parker was trying his best to knockout Cojanu, but he didn’t have the size, speed or the power to get the job done.

Parker has heavy hands, but he lacks the snap on his punches to knockout the better fighters. I think Parker could have knocked out Cojanu tonight if the Romanian fighter hadn’t done such a good job of blocking his shots with his big arms. Cojanu was blocking most of Parker’s best shots in that fight. It wasn’t easy for Parker to land consecutive shots in that fight.

“My opinion of my chances against Parker hasn’t changed after watching that. I said before I’ll knock him out and that remains the same, but now I know I’ll knock him out and take the WBO World title from him,” said Hughie about Parker.

Oh my, Hughie is sounds like he’s worked up at seeing how Parker struggled against Cojanu. It’s the one that got away. It could have been Hughie’s fight if he didn’t get injured.

It’s too, Hughie. You had your chance but you got injured so the fight went to Cojanu. Now by the time you fight for a world title, it’ll probably be Dillian Whyte that you have to fight for the WBO title. I don’t like your chances against Whyte. I don’t think that’s nearly a winnable fight as it would have been had you fought Parker.

Well, Hughie might not ever get his chance to fight Parker, because he’s likely to get beaten by someone in the near future. If Hughie is still worked up enough about fighting Parker after he loses his WBO title, I think a fight between them could be arranged. After seeing how Parker labored to beat the out of shape looking 274 pound Cojanu tonight, I don’t think Parker is going to make it through his next fight unless his promoters put him in with Tony Bellew. That’s someone that I definitely believe that Parker can beat. But it’s not saying much either, because Bellew isn’t a true heavyweight, and the only reason he won his last fight against David Haye was because of the Haymaker’s torn Achilles tendon he suffered in the 6th round of that fight. If Dillian Whyte faces Parker, I think he’ll beat him. So instead of Hughie fighting Parker, he’ll have to fight Whyte. Not only is that not a big money fight, but it’s also one that I don’t think Hughie can win. Whyte has too much power and he throws his shots too straight for the likes of Hughie in my view. I think it’s an easy fight for Whyte.

In the best possible world, Parker would face Anthony Joshua and lose his WBO title to him. Hughie would then fight Joshua in a big money fight as the WBO mandatory challenger. That would be ideal for Hughie, because he would make big bank fighting Joshua. It would also setup a ‘revenge of the Fury’ type of situation where Tyson Fury come back to boxing and look to avenge Hughie’s knockout loss to Joshua. It would make the Joshua-Fury fight even bigger.

Unfortunately, that scenario likely not happens, because Parker will probably fight Whyte next and get beaten by him. Hughie will then face Whyte, and likely be knocked out. A loss for Hughie to Whyte would take him out of the Joshua picture. I don’t know if would eliminate Hughie from ever getting a nice payday against Joshua, but I think it would remove from the path to fight him for at least 2 to 3 years depending on how well Hughie is rebuilt by his management. Hughie is kind of shaky though. I’m not sure that he can be rebuilt after a loss to Whyte.

Look at Hughie’s current situation. He hasn’t fought over 1 year due to health problems. He’s 22 right now, and supposed to be in his prime. A fighter is supposed to be at their healthiest when they’re young like Hughie. But in Hughie’s case, he’s already having health issues. I don’t think it’s necessarily going to get better for Hughie as he ages unless he can age in reverse like Benjamin Button.
