Longshots Sports’ Matthew Fagan fights former British Super Featherweight Champion Gary Buckland on Saturday and has told us to expect a highly entertaining fight on July 16th at the Ice Arena Wales, Cardiff.
Fagan is full of confidence going into the fight but will be under no illusion of the challenge ahead of him when he goes toe-to-toe with his Welsh opponent. Buckland has been a professional boxer since 2005 and is a former holder of the British Lonsdale Belt, beating high quality opponents in the process in Gavin Rees, Stephen Foster, Gary Sykes and Derry Mathews.
“It’s going to be an action-packed six rounder lets say that.” said the Ellesmere Port man.
“I know I’m fit so the rest will take care of itself, I’m 100% confident of the win.”
It has been a bumpy road for Matthew Fagan in the last 12 months. He claimed his best career win to date when he beat Adam Kettleborough in an English Lightweight eliminator back in July 2015 but the 28 year old hasn’t been able to step into the ring since due to injury and opponent pull outs.
“It’s been unbelievably [frustrating] and financially it has been really tough. It costs me £20 a day to get to Manchester but I’ve stuck in there doing bits of work. Each fight that fell through, another popped up so I thought I was due to box soon only for it not to happen again.”
He continued: “I’d rather take tougher fights than be let down on other ones. I know I’m good enough anyway.”
Prior to the scheduling of his fight on July 16th, Fagan was due to fight a fellow British prospect, Romeo Romaeo; a fight which many were licking their lips to watch due to both fighters’ exciting styles.
Unfortunately Romaeo pulled out of the fight just days before fight night but Fagan still hopes the fight can still happen.
“If the fight is there I’ll be interested. It’s tough to get fights often so as long as I train hard and get good sparring I’ll be ready when fights come along. I’ve only had 9 fights and should really be on at least 12-15 fights. It’s all ticket related and when fights fall through so often it’s hard to generate it. So hopefully this fight gets me going now.”
Fagan vs Buckland will be on the undercard of a huge show promoted by Frank Warren and headlined by Pound-for-Pound superstar Guillermo Rigondeaux vs British Champion Jazza Dickens. The show also includes World Champion Terry Flanagan in his third title defence and a tasty encounter between Liam Williams and Gary Corcoran. Fellow Longshots Sports stable mate Tommy Langford will also defend his Inter-Continental Title.
