Tyson Fury promising to slug with Wladimir Klitschko in rematch

fury67By Jeff Aranow: IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) and his team finally announced earlier on Wednesday the location and date for the rematch against the 40-year-old Wladimir Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs). Fury will be facing the Ukrainian Klitschko on July 9 at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, UK.

Fury is quite pleased at getting the rematch in the UK, because the last time they faced each other, the fight took place in Dusseldorf, Germany, which was a home fight for Klitschko. Fury says he plans on fighting much differently in the rematch with Klitschko by choosing to stand and slug with him rather than getting on his bike like he’d done last November.

Fury mostly slapped and moved against Klitschko in that fight, and it was a boring fight for most boxing fans. Wladimir proved unable to cut off the ring against the constantly moving Fury, and that made for a fight with little action. There was really nothing to separate the two giant heavyweights other than a few more slapping punches from Fury. There probably would have been no arguments if the judges had scored the fight a draw.

“What mattered most to me was getting this [fight] in England,” Fury said. “It’s very difficult to get an away win in the ring in Germany. Having done it once I didn’t want to tempt fate twice. I would have had to knock Wladimir out because they would never have given me the decision a second time. That’s because I’m going to do something different,” he said. “I’m not going to dance this time. I’m going to stand there and trade punches with Wlad and let’s see who wins in a fight like that. It will be much more exciting.”

It’s not likely that Fury will take the chance of fighting toe-to-toe with the 40-year-old Wladimir because Fury isn’t equipped with the punching power or the hand speed to win that type of fight. Fury can only beat a fighter like Wladimir by moving and slapping with his shots. Even in doing that, Fury will still have an awfully hard time winning a second time because Wladimir has clearly analyzed his previous fight with Fury, and he knows what works against him and what doesn’t.

Unless Fury can do something entirely different in the rematch, he’s probably going to lose the fight. Wladimir will probably be throwing more hands in the rematch, and he’s going to be staying on top of Fury by not letting him have any space. Fury must know that Wladimir is going to be coming after him hard on July 9, because if he didn’t feel this way, he wouldn’t be talking about wanting to slug with him.

“The only man that could beat Klitschko is me,” said Fury. “What I’ve got can’t be taught; you’ve either got it or you haven’t. How you beat robots is to do unorthodox things. I’m expecting a totally different fight; he’s going to have to come over here and fight this time. It’s going to be a slugfest.”

Fury is taking a lot of credit for beating Klitschko. The boxing world isn’t making nearly a big deal out of the win due to how old Wladimir is now. If Fury had gotten to Klitschko 10 years ago and beaten him when he was 30-years-old rather than 40, he might be getting more credit for the win. But in looking at how physically old Wladimir appears now, both in his facial looks and in how he’s fighting, it wasn’t a big deal what Fury did. For Fury to get a huge amount of credit from the fans around the world. He’s going to need to beat all the world champions including Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz.

If Fury can beat all those guys, then he’ll receive credit for having accomplished something special. Until then, Fury will have done nothing more than beaten an old man that almost lost his previous fight against Bryant Jennings.

“I’m thrilled to get this fight on July 9th at the Manchester Arena. I’m the best heavyweight in the world and the rest are imposters to my titles. I am coming for all of them once I’ve dealt with Klitschko a second time,” said Fury.

Klitschko vs. Fury 2 is seen as an even 50-50 fight. There isn’t a favorite yet, and that suggests that Fury could have a problem on his hand. If he can’t beat Klitschko in the rematch, then he won’t be able to move forward to big money fights against Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder. Those are the fight that Fury badlyt wants because he can make a lot of money against either of those guys. If Fury can fight them both, he’ll make a ton of money. Those would be three consecutive huge paydays for Fury.
