By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBC heavyweight champion Frank Bruno (40-5, 38 KOs) is considering making a comeback at age 54. Bruno hasn’t fought in 20 years since being stopped in the 3rd round by Mike Tyson in 1996. Bruno says he wants to burn off excess energy that he has by fighting. However, the odds of him receiving a boxing license from the British Boxing Board of Control are said to be slim.

You can make a pretty good argument that nothing good could come from a comeback by Bruno, who was never great to begin with even in his prime of his career. Bruno was just a decent British heavyweight with a ton of muscles but not much in the way of flexibility. Some boxing fans compare British/Commonwealth heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua to Bruno and see Joshua as a modern day Bruno with his muscular frame.

“I’ve been in the gym all the time, that’s why I want to come back into boxing,” Bruno said to ITV’s This Morning. “I haven’t got a choice. I can’t sit down and let these so-called promoters say Anthony Joshua can knock me out in two rounds when I’m not even dead,” Bruno said.

I honestly don’t think Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn would ever in a 100 years look to fight a guy as old as Bruno. I mean, there would likely be so much negative feedback if Joshua chose to fight Bruno, and I would turn out to be a dreadful career move for him.

The last thing that Joshua needs is to be seen as a guy that beats up on the 54-year-old Bruno. I know Joshua could use a good scalp to add to his resume, but I doubt he would be looking to add Bruno’s scalp, even though he appears to be in superb condition for a guy that will soon be turning 55.

“My agent has received notification from the British Boxing board of Control that should I apply for a License this would not be granted,” Bruno said on his Twitter as quoted by RingTV.com.

It would be interesting to see if the BBBofC gives Bruno a boxing license to continue his career. If they do, I don’t he’s going to have positive results with his career even if he faces weak 3rd tier opposition.

52-year-old Donovan “Razor” Ruddock recently launched a comeback in 2015 after being out of the ring for 14 years from 2001 to 2015. Ruddock won two fights against weak opposition before losing to Dillon Carman (8-2) by a 3rd round knockout last September. Ruddock hasn’t fought since the loss and it’s unclear if he’s going to continue this boxing career.

“I’ve got to be back into boxing, to get this out of my system, because I don’t want to end up in Broadmoor hospital,” Bruno said theguardian.co.uk. “I’ve been in the gym all the time, that’s why I want to come back into boxing.”

Well, I think it’s a terrible idea for Bruno to make a comeback, because he could get badly hurt.
