Khan wants Danny Garcia in December, Pacquiao in May
(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Scott Gilfoid: If Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) gets his way, he’ll be facing former WBA/WBC 140lb champion Danny Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) this December in a fight to avenge his loss to him three years ago in 2012.
If Khan defeats Garcia, he’ll then face former eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) in May of 2016 in a fight that Khan feels he’ll win. Of course, this is Khan talking and not his adviser Al Haymon, who is the one who lines up the fights for him.
Khan says he’s wanted a rematch with Garcia for the past three years, but he hasn’t had the chance to get him inside the ring. If this is true that Khan is the one that has been pushing the fight, then I don’t see any reason to think that we’re going to see Garcia suddenly want to get inside the ring with Khan.
If Khan’s focus is on getting the fight against Pacquiao, then it could be difficult for him to all of a sudden try and get a fight against Garcia for December. Khan and Haymon are probably not going to be able to get a fight against Garcia if it’s last second thing. Khan is starting to sound a little scattered here.
If Khan wants the fight against Garcia to avenge his previous loss, then he needs to be going after that fight right now rather than waiting until he knows what’s going to happen with his Pacquiao negotiations. I think it’s pretty obvious that if Khan finds out that he’s going to get a fight against Pacquiao in May, then he’ll take a soft opponent for December or maybe not even fight at all.
I can’t see Khan putting at risk his fight against Pacquiao by fighting a good opponent in December, especially when Khan hasn’t really faced anyone that you can call a good upper echelon opponent in the last three years. If anything, we’ll see Khan matched against another light hitting Chris Algieri or Devon Alexander type fighter rather than someone that can potentially punch his lights out like Shawn Porter.
“We’ve spoken to a few potential opponents for December, but a rematch with Garcia around then would be great. It’s still 14 weeks away so it’s a possibility,” Khan said.
