If Mayweather fights Golovkin in 2016, people will happily pay to see it

By fighting in a safety first manner, and then choosing to fight Berto in his last bout, Mayweather may have hurt his chances of making big money when/if he decides to come back next year to resume his career like many boxing fans think he will.

At this point I think the only guy that boxing fans will really show a lot of interest in seeing Mayweather fight is Gennady Golovkin, the unbeatable knockout artist from the middleweight division. So many fans are angry at Mayweather fight now, they would likely pay big money to see him fight a guy like Golovkin who would have a very good chance of planting Mayweather to the canvas for 100 count.

If Mayweather wanted to pay the boxing fans back, I think he should do the right thing and sign up for a fight against Golovkin. It would be a fight that would give Mayweather a chance to prove that he really is “The best ever” [TBE] instead of a fighter that many fans see as a pretender and a safety first fighter.

A lot of fans want to see Mayweather get knocked out because of their anger at how his fights with Pacquiao and Berto went, and Golovkin would be the one they would want to see do a job on Mayweather.

It would be Mayweather’s first real fight in two year where he fought a guy with a good chance of beating him. But with a puncher like Golovkin, he would not only have a good chance of beating Mayweather, but beating him badly by knocking him out cold unless his father/trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. threw in the towel the moment Mayweather gets stunned for the first time.

Mayweather fought like he was afraid to mix it up in both his Berto and Pacquiao fights, and it turned away a lot of fans with the way he fought. Mayweather made a massive amount of money in the Pacquiao fight.

The money that he got in that fight should have given Mayweather motivation to give the fans their money’s worth. We didn’t see that though from Mayweather or Pacquiao. Everything about that fight and that fight card had cheap written all over.

I’ve never seen a fight event have that kind of money generated from the fans with so little to show for it in terms of the main event and the undercard fights that were added.

The whole thing was done in a weird way. We haven’t seen Pacquiao fight yet since the Mayweather fight, but it wouldn’t be surprising if his next fight on HBO pay-per-view is a flop because of how upset fans are still about the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.

If Mayweather is going to come back next year for his 50th fight, the only way I see him getting a lot of PPV buys for his fight is if he faces IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs). I’m talking about big money, not the $33 million in guaranteed money that he’ll likely be given by Showtime or HBO.

Mayweather is going to make money even if he decides he wants to fight Andre Berto again, or some other no-hoper like Karim Mayfield. But if Mayweather wants to make over $100 million or so, he’s going to need to fight someone like Golovkin, because I don’t think the boxing fans will come back to support him if he merely faces guys like Amir Khan, Kell Brook, Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter, Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Danny Garcia.

Yes, Mayweather can probably make $100 million for a rematch against Pacquiao, but I think it would create a lot of anger from the fans if that fight were made a second time. I also think it would potentially harm the sport of boxing if Pacquiao and Mayweather fought again because the potential for it to be another bad fight would be high because of Mayweather’s disinterest in staying in the pocket and slugging with the Filipino fighter.

I think the best opponent that Mayweather could choose if he comes back next year is Golovkin. I think boxing fans angry at Mayweather would pay big money to see him fight Golovkin because they would want to see him get knocked out so badly. This would be seen as a payback for Mayweather for his last two fights that many boxing fans felt were rip off fights.
