lara444By Dan Ambrose: WBA World junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (21-2-2, 12 KOs) will be defending his WBA 154lb title next month against 39-year-old #8 WBA, #10 WBO contender Jan Zaveck (35-3, 19 KOs) in a fight on November 25th on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN from the Hialeah Park Racing and Casino in Miami, Florida.

The fight will be televised on a Wednesday. In terms of a match-up, it’s not a very good one. For boxing fans who remember Keith Thurman’s fight against Zaveck in 2013, they’ll remember how it was a very easy one for the 5’7” Thurman.

Thurman won all 12 rounds and never has worried at all about what Zaveck was doing in the ring. The 5’7 ½” Zaveck will be giving away close to two inches in height to the 5’9” Lara, but the skill level and hand speed difference will be the real problem for Zaveck. He’s just not in the same league as Lara, and this fight could be just about as easy for the Cuban Lara as his last two fights were against Delvin Rodriguez and Ishe Smith.

Lara was beaten by Saul “Canelo” Alvarez by a controversial 12 round decision two years ago in 2013. Since then, Lara has won his last two fights. He wants to fight Canelo again because he feels he was robbed in that fight, but Lara isn’t doing anything to make it worthwhile for Canelo to fight him.

If Lara was fighting the really quality fighters in the 154lb division, then it would be a lot easier for him to get Canelo back in the ring to fight him again.

Fighting on Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on ESPN on 11/25 will give Lara some good visibility with the boxing fans. The fight starts at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. This means that the fight should be seen by a lot of boxing fans at home.

“I’m very excited to be defending my title in my hometown of Miami,” said Lara. “Getting in the ring with a former world champion and an experienced fighter like Jan Zaveck is something I’m very much looking forward to. On November 25 I will put on a show for all my fans and especially all my Cuban fans watching on ESPN.”

Lara needs to upgrade the level of opposition he’s facing because fighting the likes of Zaveck, Lara and Rodriguez isn’t going to do much in terms of his popularity in the boxing world. Instead of fighting Zaveck, Lara needs to fight the likes of Gennady Golovkin, Jermall Charlo, Michel Soro, Liam Smith, Julian Williams, Joshua Clottey, Anthony Mundine, and Jermell Charlo.
