Eubank Jr targeting Golovkin fight in two years

eubank3333By Scott Gilfoid: WBA interim middleweight champion Chris Eubank Jr (19-1, 14 KOs) sees himself beating IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) in two years and collecting all the titles. Eubank Jr and his father Chris Eubank thinks that Golovkin is slow, easy to hit and beatable. However, it looks like their opinion of Golovkin was decided before his 8th round destruction job on David Lemieux last Saturday night.

After an impressive performance like that, you can’t say that Golovkin is easy to hit because he made Lemieux look like an ape in the ring. It was so one-sided that the referee stopped the fight in the 8th round with Lemieux still on his feet and seemingly in full command of his mental faculties.

“There is no reason that within the next two years, I can’t have all those belts,” Eubank Jr said. “Golovkin has got weaknesses that I feel I can exploit, so the goal is to work towards that fight. It’s a huge fight down the line. I think he’s easy to hit and I can exploit that. I don’t think he’s had a defining fight. I don’t think he’s fought anyone who’s really been there to try and win.”

Well, if Eubank Jr is going to be working towards a big money fight against Golovkin down the line in the next two years, then he’s going to need to lean on his promoter Eddie Hearn to make sure that he matches him very, very carefully to avoid putting him in with anyone good because we already saw what happened to Eubank Jr when he tried fighting Billy Joe Saunders in November 2014. I don’t think it would be a good idea for Eubank Jr to fight anyone good like Tureano Johnson because I think he would whip him and make him look worse than he did Eamonn O’Kane.

In a sign that Hearn is going to spoon feed Eubank Jr weak opposition, he’ll be facing #13 WBA Toney Jeter (20-4-1, 14 KOs) this Saturday night at the Sheffield Arena in Sheffield, UK. Sky Sports 1 will be televising the fight, which believe it or not is the main event on the card. That’s a fight that you wouldn’t see in a main event on HBO or Showtime, because the fight is too much of a mismatch.

“People see him as the top fighter in the middleweight division and, as the type of fighter I am, I want to fight the best,” Eubank Jr said about Golovkin.

I just wonder what Eubank Jr is going to do when he finally faces Golovkin in two years and gets turned into another Willie Monroe Jr? I see Eubank Jr as identical fighter as Monroe, and Golovkin will have to carry Eubank Jr for the fight to be even remotely interesting to the boxing fans. If Golovkin steps on the gas in the 1st round, then he’ll end the fight too quickly and the fans won’t get their money’s worth.

I see Eubank Jr as a limited contender who wouldn’t have the interim WBA middleweight title if he had to face a good contender like Tureano Johnson. Eubank Jr only had to beat the slow as molasses Dmitry Chudinov to win the interim WBA strap.
