Image: Mayweather received offer of 9 figures to continue careerBy Allan Fox: Superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) is now finding himself being besieged with offers for him to continue his pro career now that his six-fight contract with Showtime/CBS is expiring with his final fight against Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) this Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The contract that Mayweather received from Showtime could be dwarfed by some of the offers that he’ll be receiving.

Mayweather said via mlive.com that he’s received some “crazy numbers at me to stay in the sport, nine figures, up front.”

The offers could wind up getting bigger and bigger the longer Mayweather waits. He can’t wait too long though, because if he stays out of the sport for a long period, boxing fans will move on and find new stars to follow.

I’m not sure that Manny Pacquiao will be the guy that the fans flock behind though if Mayweather decides to stay out of the ring for a year or more. The last time Mayweather stepped away from the sport for two years following his win over Ricky Hatton in 2007, fans started following Pacquiao in huge numbers.

With Mayweather out of the ring, Pacquiao became a big star with wins over Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto. Mayweather came back in 2009 to defeat Juan Manuel Marquez, and he’s been fighting ever since.

Right now, Mayweather has been reluctant to accept any of the offers that have come his way. Whether that will remain that way in the future remains to be seen. If Mayweather starts spending up all the money that he made in the Pacquiao fight, then we could see him in need of cash and making a comeback to help feather his nest.

With the way Mayweather has been throwing his money around in buying expensive jewelry and cars, he might need to come back next year so that he can refill his bank account from the money he blew. It’s hard to imagine spending over a million on a car, but Mayweather has been doing that. With the way cars lose value quickly, it doesn’t make sense for Mayweather to dump money on expensive automobiles. He’d be better off purchasing real estate, because at least that holds value if he purchases property in good areas.

Few boxing fans can understand how Mayweather would pick this time to walk away from the sport following his huge money fight against Manny Pacquiao. It seems senseless for Mayweather to pick this moment to hang up the gloves, especially with the way he’s burning through his money.

Mayweather can still make a huge amount of money. Those opportunities for Mayweather to make this kind of money won’t be there once he’s out of the sport. He’ll need to make money by being business savvy, and it’s unclear if he’s the type of person who can increase his wealth in the business world.

We know that Mayweather makes money through gambling, but it’s unclear whether he’s coming out on top with a positive cash flow in this endeavor or not. It’s hard to imagine Mayweather being able to hold onto his fortune if he’s going to be gambling huge sums on a frequent basis.

“Numbers have come at me, you know,” to remain active, Mayweather said. “But right now, I’m OK.”

Mayweather will be able to pick between HBO and Showtime if he wants to continue his career in 2016. A rematch between him and Pacquiao would seem like an impossible to resist fight. If Mayweather were to walk away from taking a second fight with Pacquiao, then it’ll be difficult to see Mayweather as the business man that he touts himself to be.

A businessman would likely never walk away from a fight that could make him $200 million+ like a rematch against Pacquiao would for Mayweather. He says he made $300 million for his fight last May against Pacquiao. If that’s the case, then he needs to fight him again so that he can make sure he’s got enough money in retirement that he can’t burn through quickly by blowing it on extremely expensive cars and other such luxury items.

Mayweather is in a great position to cash in by accepting the best offer given to him. It’ll be interesting to see if he accepts an offer and continues on.
