_MG_1357(Photo credit: Suzanne Teresa/Premier Boxing Champions) By Dan Ambrose: With his huge payday of $275 million for his last fight against Manny Pacquiao last May, Floyd Mayweather Jr. appears to have no interest in facing a quality welterweight for his September fight. He said that’s not interested in facing Shawn Porter after his win over Adrien Broner last night, although he would like for Porter to fight on his undercard in September.

Mayweather says he still is kicking around the idea of fighting struggling welterweights Andre Berto or Karim Mayfield. Neither of these fighters’ careers are doing too well right now. Berto is ranked #1 by the WBA off of a win over journeyman Josesito Lopez and Steven Upsher Chambers, but those aren’t quality fighters. Berto looked terrible against Lopez until knocking him out.

“No, I just don’t feel like it’s gonna happen,” Floyd said via Fighthype about a fight against Shawn Porter. “He can fight on my under-card in September. Either Karim Mayfield or Andre Berto, that’s who Floyd Mayweather will be facing in September. I mean, every fighter, you know. One of those guys could upset Floyd Mayweather, you never know. It’s the Mayweather sweepstakes, who’s gonna hit the lottery. It all depends on how I feel.”

The media reporters was laughing when Mayweather said he was still thinking of fighting Berto and Mayfield. It was as of they were expecting Mayweather to reveal that he was just kidding by saying the was interested in fighting those guys, but he looked dead serious and never cracked a smile. It obviously wouldn’t be a great choice of fighting Mayfield or Berto because it’s such a huge step down from the guys that Mayweather has been fighting. He would be better off facing a retread opponent like Guerrero than fighting the likes of Berto or Mayfield.

When asked if he would be fighting Amir Khan in September, Mayweather said flatly “No.”

Mayweather seemed dead serious when he was talking about wanting to fight Berto or Mayfield, and it looks like he’s interested in taking an easy fight for his last fight of his career in September. A lot of boxing fans expect Mayweather to come back to try and win his 50th fight against Manny Pacquiao next year.

Mayweather made so much money off of his fights against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Pacquiao that it really doesn’t matter who he fights in September. He’s still going to make big money for the fight without any risk involved. The PPV numbers might be high for the fight anyway given that Mayweather is coming off of a big fight against Pacquiao, and because fans will want to see Mayweather’s last fight of his career, if that’s how they sell the fight.

Mayweather would be doing Berto or Mayfield a huge favor in giving them a fight because neither of them are going to make that kind of money in their careers against anyone else. Both of them will likely see their careers finished off soon anyway given how poor they’ve looked. Berto has recent losses to Robert Guerrero and Jesus Soto Karass. Mayfield was beaten by Thomas Dulorme and Emmanuel Taylor recently.
