Khan: Mayweather needs to finish his career on a high by fighting me

Amir Khan Andre Berto Floyd Mayweather JrBy Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) is potentially making a big mistake by thinking of finishing his career on what he considers to be a low by facing the likes of Andre Berto or Karim Mayfield, two stable mates of his from his trainer Virgil Hunter’s Hayward, California gym where they all workout of.

Khan thinks that Mayweather should be looking to finish his career on what he considers a high by facing him instead of one of those fighters. The problem is Mayweather doesn’t see the 28-year-old Khan as a big test or a fight that is appealing enough for him to want to fight him.

As such, he’s looking at Berto and Mayfield to fill his September 12th fight date at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I like the way Khan throws his fellow stable-mates under the bus by saying that he sees Mayweather as finishing his career on a low against them. I can’t imagine saying something about someone on my own team. How does Khan continue to see those guys at the same gym after making comments like this? Khan should be saying positive things about these guys getting looked over for a huge payday fight instead of negative things, don’t you think?

“Floyd says he thinks he needs an easy fight now because he’s proved himself by beating Pacquiao,” Khan said via “He wants to fight Andre Berto and Karim Mayfield. No disrespect to those two because they’re good fighters and good friends of mine too.”

If Mayweather picks Berto or Mayfield to fight, then it tells you that he didn’t see other fights as big enough or as important enough for him to want to bother with. I mean, Mayweather says that he’ll make $100 million off his next fight. I guess it doesn’t matter who he faces to get that good cash. He’s getting the money either way. Berto is a fighter that is well known to American fans because his fights have been televised off and on since 2007 in the U.S.

Berto is someone that the American public is aware of, and it would be a fight that Mayweather could attract a lot of fans if he were to fight him. Berto is also ranked #1 by the WBA, so he’s just as highly ranked as Khan [#1 WBC] is. It’s not as if Mayweather is fighting a fringe contender if he were to face him.

Mayfield is obviously a little different in that he’s not ranked, but he’s got an interesting fighting style with good power and speed. Mayfield would make it an exciting fight because he comes forward all the time, and he’s not fighting off of his back foot like Khan 24/7/ Mayfield also doesn’t hold, shove or run like Khan. Altogether, Mayfield is a more fan friendly fighter than Khan in my view. Mayweather won’t have to deal with being held and shoved all night long if he faces Mayfield. He also won’t have to chase him around the ring like he might have to do with Khan.

“He [Mayweather] needs to finish on a high. What he’s probably going to do is leave the game on a low and I think that’s the worst thing to do,” Khan said.
Mayweather’s trainer/dad Floyd Mayweather Sr. doesn’t want to see Khan get the payday against his son. All the trash talking that Khan has done has resulted in Floyd Sr. saying he doesn’t want Mayweather to fight him and let him get the money that would come from such a fight. Floyd Sr. was in favor of them fighting in the past, but after this latest round of trash talking by Khan, Floyd Sr. has decided that he doesn’t want him to get the payday.

There are a lot of fans who feel that Khan just wants the cash out payday that would come of a fight against Mayweather. They feel that Khan doesn’t really believe that he can beat Mayweather. They think he just wants the money fight because he could retire from the sport after the fight because it would be like winning the lottery.
