Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: The Real Reason The Boxing World Is Still Talking
By Brickshot: As of May 2nd, Floyd Mayweather Jr. had been declared the winner of the showdown between he and the Filipino star Manny Pacquiao. Usually after a huge event the winner of the bout celebrates his victory and the boxing world sees the truth as it is like any other typical win, but this bout was a little different.
As weeks passed by the boxing world was stirred up with information that was unknown prior to the fight, and the unanimous decision win had now become more of a unanimous controversy.
Compubox was a system originally created to settle controversies by counting punches landed and punches thrown to give the audience a better perception on who should be the winner of a fight if the fight were to go the distance. On the night of the fight the stats favored Floyd Mayweather and because the audience trusts the system, the stats were accepted. This did not settle right in the minds of the fans or with Manny Pacquiao. Soon after the fight he stated that he believed he won the fight. Many people said “How outrageous!”, but after this statement, many went back to view the fight again and found that many of the punches landed were not counted thus leading many to start talking about a possible bogus decision.
From this point fans from both sides started throwing rocks. Some would even say that Pacquiao’s fans were delusional, but even after the evidence was bright as day it was ignored or was swept under the rug. Now if delusional means believing in something that is not truth and the evidence presents itself, then the “delusional” rock throwing needs to stop.
Boxing fans from around the world have been outraged from having to pay 100 dollars to see a man run, hug, tug, scrape, and finally end up with a now controversial decision. When boxing had stars the stars did not have to be undefeated they just had to show their offense along with a defense. Their was mad respect between the two fighters after the fight and the crowd would be satisfied even if their favorite fighter had lost the fight because they both had given their all! “Boxing is dead” is the phrase that is now again looming through the media because of this catastrophe and because one fighter is satisfied with the “W” it has cost the integrity of the sport to fall even more.
The boxing world is still talking not because they cannot except the outcome of a fight, they are talking in hopes that the sport that they truly love does not fall apart in front of their eyes.
